Our Genomics Laboratory is expanding, and we are seeking a Level I Genetic Counselor to join our team. Job Summary This full‑time laboratory genetic counseling position supports our growing genomic testing program. The candidate will work closely with laboratory directors, genomic analysts, and senior counselors to interpret variants on exome and genome platforms, generate test reports, contribute to SOP development, and participate in quality improvement projects and research initiatives. The role includes teaching responsibilities with students, fellows, and trainees, and regular engagement with clinical teams to provide genomic services. Key Responsibilities Core Responsibilities: • Proficient in core genetic counseling skills as outlined by the National Society of Genetic Counselors.• Deep knowledge of genetics and ability to translate complex information into clear, relevant explanations.• Strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence and self‑awareness.• Analytical skills for dissecting complex problems and conducting self‑education.• Adherence to Lurie Children’s service principles and mission. Clinical Genetic Counselor Responsibilities: • Communicate test results to patients/families, clinicians, and referral physicians.• Coordinate follow‑up care and document patient visits.• Provide education on genetics and disease management tailored to diverse audiences.• Conduct psychosocial assessments and support patients coping with genetic diagnoses.• Participate in inpatient consultations, on‑call rotation, and triage urgent referrals.• Maintain electronic medical record documentation. Laboratory Utilization Management Responsibilities: • Act as liaison between laboratory and clinicians for test order review and authorization.• Recommend alternative testing strategies based on risk, benefit, and cost analysis.• Review clinical and family histories to define appropriate testing strategies.• Coordinate insurance authorization and follow‑up testing.• Develop written documentation and communicate results to ordering clinicians.• Assist with CPT coding and regulatory compliance. Molecular Laboratory Genetic Counselor Responsibilities: • Perform data interpretation for in‑house genetic tests and review patient/family history.• Generate comprehensive reports and communicate recommendations.• Conduct literature searches to integrate new discoveries.• Participate in new test development and SOP/Workflow optimization.• Support laboratory revenue cycle coordination. Research Genetic Counselor Responsibilities: • Prepare regulatory documents, protocols, and informed consent for studies.• Coordinate study activities, including recruitment, data collection, and monitoring.• Apply research methods to recruit participants and conduct visits.• Maintain study documentation, monitor adverse events, and support grant deliverables.• Contribute to scientific dissemination through abstracts, posters, and manuscripts.• Promote ethical research conduct and comply with institutional regulations. Education Activities: • Supervise students and residents in genetics rotation.• Provide educational resources and shadowing opportunities.• Educate laboratory staff, clinicians, and community partners on genetic disorders. Advocacy and Leadership Activities: • Participate in family support and patient advocacy programs.• Engage in division or hospital committees, programs, and working groups.• Active membership in professional societies such as GTFI, NSGC, ASHG, ACMG, and SIMD. Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree from an accredited genetic counseling graduate program. Current Illinois Genetic Counseling License. No required years of experience for the entry‑level position. For research counselors: current CITI certifications for study coordination. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with Epic or similar EMR systems. Strong communication, project management, negotiation, and education skills. Ability to work flexibly across laboratory, clinical, and research domains. Compensation and Benefits Salary Range: $76,960.00 – $125,840.00 per year.
