The primary purpose of this position, Fire Protection Inspector, GS-0081-09, is to serve as a Fire Protection Specialist, Engineer Technician consultant at the program management level and single point of contact and technical authority relating to fire protection for all base construction and renovation projects. - Direct, review and coordinate on fire protection engineering and fire prevention requirements in coordination with Fire Protection Engineers (FPE).
- Determine the need for fire suppression systems, fire detection systems, and fire reporting systems for existing and new facilities in coordination with the assigned Professional Engineer (PE).
- Serve as a point of contact in providing fire protection guidance to Professional Engineers for Contracting, Army Corps of Engineers, Air Force Material Command (AFMC), National Guard Bureau, Air Force Reserve tenants, and AF and other base organizations.
- Provide technical advice to the Fire Chief regarding the effect of both immediate and long-range planning programs related to fire protection engineering.
- Perform duties as Incident Safety Officer (ISO), participates within the incident management system as a command staff member and response to emergency in accordance with SOP/SOG to emergency incidents.
- Knowledge of fire protection engineering theory, philosophy, principles, practices.
- Knowledge of fire protection building construction features and fire protection building codes.
- Knowledge of fire suppression systems, fire detection, and reporting systems.
- Ability to maintain good working relations; communicate orally and in writing; and lift and carry heavy loads.
- Ability to develop lesson plans and to read complex construction drawings.
ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Perform strenuous physical activities such as lifting heavy firefight equipment, climbing standard and aerial ladders, and lifting and carrying people and equipment for rescue and salvage. NOTE: THIS POSITION REQUIRES A PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL.
- WORK ENVIRONMENT: Firefighters are regularly exposed to a variety of dangerous situations such as fires that are out of control, toxic spills, or possible explosions. Hazards include: Burns, dehydration, and other effects of heat, smoke inhalation, falling materials, or explosions; Exposure to toxic materials and chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive agents; Physical injury and sensory damage from firefighting activities and noise levels; Dealing with victims in varying stages of fright, panic and injury; Operating or riding on fire truck under adverse conditions or flying in aircraft to reach crash sites of fires in outlying areas.
