Staff Psychiatrist

The Staff Psychiatrist is primarily responsible for psychiatric evaluations, medication intervention and management of Penn students seeking treatment through Student Health and Counseling. Specific responsibilities include psychiatric diagnostic evaluations and maintenance care of patients; collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of clinicians and trainees and provision of on-call coverage on a rotating basis during days, nights and weekends. On-call coverage may include coordinating with campus partnership offices or collaborating with campus resources to assist a student in crisis. Job may entail formal or informal supervision of trainees. Completes all appropriate clinical notes and agency data collection. Follows all University and Student Health and Counseling policies and procedures. Maintains strict adherence to principles of confidentiality. An understanding and foundation in multicultural frameworks is strongly preferred.

Job Responsibilities

• Provides direct clinical psychiatric services to students including diagnostic evaluations, and emergency consultations. Initiates care as appropriate.
• Provides direct care to students including medication management and maintenance.
• Collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team of clinicians, and trainees on the assessment and treatment of cases.
• Provides formal and informal supervision of psychiatric nurse practitioner interns.
• Provides on-call coverage during the day and after hours on a rotating basis.
• Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• MD or DO degree. Completion of an accredited residency in psychiatry with 3 - 5 years experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Board certification in psychiatry.
• Licensed in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, unrestricted federal DEA license.
• Experience in psychiatric treatment of adolescent/young adult population preferred.
• Experience with a college student population strongly preferred.
• Experience with electronic health records desirable.
• Experience providing crisis intervention, short-term counseling and referral services; psychiatric evaluations, and medication management.
• Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills and sensitivity to cross cultural issues.
• Demonstrated ability to perform supervisory and administrative functions.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with other mental health professionals in providing high quality mental health services as part of a treatment team and consulting with other university personnel.
• Demonstrated ability to provide consultation to SHaC staff, SHaC trainees, administration, faculty, staff, students, and families regarding mental health issues.
• Ability to assist in the hiring of new staff and also the selection of trainees as needed.
• Ability to work on-call schedule on a rotating basis.
