Description: This position is for a Registered Nurse in a Patient Care Unit. The unit has a total of 40 beds with patient ratios of 1:5 for step-down and 1:6 for MedSurg, adjusting to 1:5 if combined for day and night shifts. The goal is to maintain a free charge system with typically 1-2 CNAs based on volume during day and night shifts. Equipment used includes Baxter IV pumps, and the documentation system is Cerner. Nurses are expected to work every other weekend, assist with holidays, and may float to other units within their skill set. Patient safety and care are prioritized above all. The unit focuses on clinical decision-making and direct admissions from the emergency department. Key responsibilities include completing admission assessments, medication reconciliation, and initiating acute care orders. This unit is not an overflow or holding area but rather an active participant in reducing overall length of stay and enhancing the patient and family experience. Patients will present with a wide variety of diagnoses, highlighting the need for a well-rounded nursing background. Advanced skills are beneficial, and minimal bedside procedures are performed in this environment. A professional dress code is required, consisting of navy blue and white uniforms without t-shirts. Opportunities for extensions are common among travel nurses, with many opting to stay for several years. Floating to other units is required as needed, with additional opportunities in telemetry and as transport nurses. Telemetry nurses monitor patients centrally to ensure safety, while transport nurses facilitate the movement of higher acuity patients to specialized inpatient units. This structure supports ongoing care within the emergency department and enhances patient flow.
