Job Summary The Human Services Unit within the State Services section of the Colorado Department of Law seeks an attorney to counsel the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS), the Colorado Department of Early Childhood (CDEC), and the Behavioral Health Administration (BHA). The position involves high‑impact litigation and policy work across a broad range of subject areas, including child welfare, behavioral health, and public benefits. Key Responsibilities Litigate before federal and state district courts and the Office of Administrative Courts in matters such as child abuse, neglect, adult mistreatment, licensing actions, and civil complaints seeking injunctive relief. Handle constitutional challenges, anti‑discrimination laws, and other high‑impact legal questions affecting statewide or national mandates. Advise on rulemaking, legislation, records requests, subpoenas, and conduct legal research for CDHS, CDEC, and BHA. Prepare guidance and advice on complex legal issues, including administrative, juvenile, child welfare, behavioral health, privacy law, and appellate law. Qualifications Licensed to practice law in Colorado or eligible to waive into the Colorado Bar. At least 3 years of experience litigating complex matters in district or administrative courts, or 1–3 years for Assistant Attorney General I. Strong legal writing, research, and analytical skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence. Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a legal team. Interest in cases involving children, vulnerable adults, and emotionally challenging subject matters. Compensation & Benefits Assistant Attorney General I salary range: $88,197–$96,554 annually (effective July 1 2025). Assistant Attorney General II salary range: $102,099–$136,468 annually. Salary is determined by qualifications and Equal Pay for Equal Work Act compliance.
