Overview The Long Term Non-Permanent (LTNP) Microbiologist 1 performs analytical testing in the biology section to produce high‑quality, legally defensible data that supports laboratory certifications and accreditations. The role operates in a fast‑paced environment with frequent interruptions and shifting priorities, requiring strong organizational skills and self‑management. Daily activities include sample preparation, quality checks, analytical testing, peer review, proficiency testing, foodborne illness investigations, SOP and document updates, training, decontamination, mouse husbandry, cleaning, media preparation, data entry and review, and participation in internal and external audits. The position also performs regulatory testing on food, dairy, shellfish, seafood, water, and other samples to ensure the health and safety of consumers in Alaska and worldwide. Responsibilities Sample preparation, quality checks, analytical testing, peer review, proficiency testing and data entry. Foodborne illness investigations and regulatory testing of food, dairy, shellfish, seafood, and water samples. Maintaining and updating SOPs and laboratory documentation. Training, decontamination, mouse husbandry, cleaning, and media preparation. Participation in internal and external audits. Qualifications Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology, medical technology, laboratory science, biological science, chemistry, or a closely related field. Experience in adaptability, reasoning, interpersonal skills, analytical thinking/problem‑solving, and quality assurance. Valid Alaska driver’s license is desired. Some positions may require immunization against infectious diseases. Special Notice Requires performing a terminal bioassay on live mice and participating in weekend/holiday rotations for mouse care. Exposure to pathogenic organisms such as E. coli, Listeria, Salmonella, Staphylococcus, Vibrio, Brucella; common allergens including shellfish, crustaceans, rodents, feathers; live and dead animal tissues; parasites (e.g., ticks); corrosive chemicals such as hydrochloric and nitric acid. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required. Valid Alaska driver’s license is desired. Working Environment Located in its own building near Anchorage’s U‑Med district, the EHL offers free parking, public transportation access, bike racks, shower amenities, and well‑equipped laboratory spaces that support both independent and collaborative work. The facility is close to Far North Bicentennial Park and Campbell Tract trails, providing opportunities for outdoor breaks.
