PUBLIC WORKS INSPECTOR

Under the direction of the Deputy Director of Public Works, the Public Works Inspector performs skilled and detailed inspections of engineering construction, maintenance, and public works projects; interprets plans and specifications to ensure compliance with contracts and work plans; prepares and recommends change orders and cost estimates; and performs other related duties as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The following list of functions, duties, and tasks is typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform other closely related or department-specific functions, duties, and tasks from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. Inspects a variety of public works construction and maintenance projects, such as sidewalks, concrete structures, driveways, sewer mains, curbs and gutters, retaining walls, earthwork, street excavation and patchwork, and storm drains. Ensures that construction and materials comply with contract standards and specifications, state laws, local ordinances, and proper construction practices. Reviews plans, specifications, and sites for construction projects, and prepares cost estimates and bid specifications. Locates and checks installation of sewer connections and layout of new sewer lines; monitors air tests and conducts grading inspections. Coordinates and inspects traffic signal installations and contractor services. Meets and confers with representatives of utility companies, contractors, engineers, and other public agencies regarding construction plans and specifications. Issues encroachment, transportation, and grading permits and inspects progress on private development and public works projects. Updates and drafts city maps on a variety of different scales; updates sewer and storm drain locations for new developments, issues new addresses for new developments. OTHER DUTIES: Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit and the City.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent, supplemented by college-level course work in construction and/or engineering; and three years of construction inspection experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. LICENSE(S) REQUIRED: Valid, current driver's license. The City reasonably expects driving to be one of the job functions for the position, and the City reasonably believes that using an alternative form of transportation would not be comparable in travel time or cost to the City. DISASTER SERVICE WORKER :

Under California law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109), all City of Placentia employees are designated as Disaster Service Workers, (DSW). In the event of a catastrophic event, City of Placentia employees may be expected to fulfill emergency action assignments. As DSW's, employees may be assigned to assist in any disaster service activity that promotes the protection of public health and safety and preservation of lives and property. Schedule- The City operates on a "4/10" work schedule. Retirement - The City of Placentia participates in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) and does not participate in Social Security. 2% @ 60 defined retirement plan (Classic Members) - Applies to employees who, prior to January 1, 2013, were active members of CalPERS or another public employee retirement system through which reciprocity may be established. Employee membership contribution is 7%. 2% @ 62 defined retirement plan (New Members/PEPRA) - Applies to new employees hired on or after January 1, 2013, who are not members of CalPERS or are not members of another public employee retirement system with which reciprocity may be established. Employee membership contribution is 6.75%. Bilingual Pay- An additional pay of $175 per month Health Insurance - Up to $2,076 per month for family coverage to purchase health insurance through the CalPERS Health Benefits program. Medical opt out also available. Dental & Vision Insurance - Fully paid plan for dental and vision insurance. Life Insurance - Fully paid life insurance policy equal to employee's annual salary.
