Overview Sentara RMH Medical Center in Harrisonburg, VA is hiring a Cardiovascular Surgical Technologist for the Cardiac Operating Room. The position requires working Monday through Friday from 6:30 am to 2:30 pm, with a required call schedule that includes weekday call from 2:30 pm to 6:00 am the following morning and weekend call 24 hours Saturday and Sunday. Candidates must live within 30 minutes of the hospital for call purposes. A $15,000 sign‑on bonus is available for qualified candidates. Location & Shift City/State: Harrisonburg, VA Work Shift: First (Days) Department Overview The cardiovascular surgical technologist works within the Cardio‑Thoracic Operating Room (CTOR), one of two dedicated CTORs and one hybrid OR in Sentara RMH’s 14‑OR surgical services department. The technologist collaborates with a multidisciplinary team that includes cardiothoracic surgeons, anesthesiologists, cardiovascular technologists, physician assistants, and registered nurses. Responsibilities Assists cardiovascular surgeons during open‑heart, vascular, and thoracic procedures as the primary scrub technician. Pre‑operative setup: prepares the operating room, organizes instruments and supplies, ensures all instruments are sterilized and functioning. Maintains sterile technique and infection control standards throughout the operation. Anticipates the surgeon’s needs and provides intra‑operative support to optimize surgical outcomes and patient safety. Handles specimens appropriately, documents as required, and performs accurate counts with the circulator before the operation and during each body‑plane closure. Participates in pre‑operative briefings, in‑operative updates, and post‑operative debriefings to support surgical quality improvement. Assists with room turnover between cases and participates in cleaning and organization of the department. Maintains a safe environment throughout the procedure, addressing patient physical safety, fire prevention, infection control, and the highest level of sterile field organization. Education High school diploma or equivalent required. Trade school graduate preferred. Certification / Licensure National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) certification; surgical technologist licensure required if the state mandates it. Certified Surgical Technologist. Basic Life Support (BLS). Experience At least 1 year of experience in cardio or thoracic surgery. In‑depth knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy, instrumentation, and procedures. Experience with all types of CVOR cases, including TAVR and combined vascular cases. Independent proficiency in advanced cardiac surgery skills required for all cardiac surgery procedures. Excellent communication and teamwork skills with a commitment to open communication and an inclusive team environment. Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure with strong attention to detail and physical stamina for long, intense, high‑risk cases. Performs thorough reviews of the surgeon’s preferences and checks supplies and equipment needed for each procedure.
