General Definition of Work
Performs intermediate semiskilled work monitoring and maintaining roadsides and rights-of-way, repairing city streets and alleys, patching chips and cracks, spreading road materials such as gravel and salt, performing snow removal, conducting equipment and vehicle checks, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Street Commissioner.

Essential Functions
Operates vehicles, equipment, and personal tools in the repair and maintenance of city streets, sidewalks, ditches, and rights-of-way.
Monitors and maintains fluid levels on assigned vehicles and equipment; performs routine maintenance on vehicles and heavy equipment.
Loads, hauls, dumps, and spreads blacktop, rock, sand, aggregate, and cinders; assists with road preparation for blacktopping; maintains road safety in ice and snow; performs snow removal and applies salt and sand to roads seasonally.
Maintains roadsides and rights-of-way; collects trash and leaves; cuts and removes fallen trees; clears brush; mows and removes weeds from ditches, bridges, intersections, and overpasses.
Excavates and cleans ditches and drainage sites; pours concrete and installs culverts.
Maintains city streets and alleys; clears access rocks and debris; seals cracks and chips; patches holes; hauls, shovels, and spreads road materials.
Services and maintains vehicles and equipment; checks fuel gauges and warning lights; ensures proper functionality.
Replaces and repairs traffic signs within the City; updates sign inventory as necessary.
Performs flagging and traffic control duties at work sites as necessary.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of materials, methods and practices essential to maintenance and repair of streets and related facilities; general knowledge of the maintenance methods and practices as applied to street construction, maintenance and repair; general knowledge of applicable state, federal and local ordinances, codes, laws, rules and regulations, legislative issues and policies and procedures; general knowledge of work zone safety; skill in the use of personal computers, associated software packages, hardware, and peripheral equipment; skill in the use of hand and power tools; skill in the use and operation of assigned equipment and vehicles; ability to perform manual labor; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
Education and Experience
High School diploma or GED and moderate experience operating medium to heavy equipment, assisting with road construction, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work frequently sitting and occasionally requires walking, speaking or hearing, climbing or balancing, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather); work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
Special Requirements
Obtain Tree Crew certification within 1 year of hire.
Obtain Arborist training within 1 year of hire.
Obtain CPR certification within 1 year of hire.
Valid commercial driver's license with Class B and air brake endorsement in the State of Indiana, or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
