Position Summary and Purpose The RN Applicant is a pre‑licensure graduate registered nurse applicant who will deliver nursing care to patients of varying age groups by utilizing the nursing process and nursing practice standards under the direct supervision of a licensed RN. The RN Applicant uses: Nursing Practice Competencies to intervene to achieve safe, optimal patient and family‑centered care health outcomes. Leadership Competencies to coordinate patient care and communicate with the care team. Professional Profile Competencies to develop professionally as a lifelong learner. Practice Outcomes Competencies to evaluate care based on evidence, the UofL Health quality model, and patient safety goals. The RN Applicant demonstrates competency caring for complex patients and participates on the care team to improve the quality of care in the clinical area. Essential Functions Conduct systematic, continuous, and comprehensive assessments of patient health status from admission or encounter to discharge, ensuring patient safety and collaborating with the healthcare team, patient, and family. Administer medications independently, assess and reassess their effects, and document administration in a timely manner per policies and regulatory requirements. Plan care with patient and family using current scientific knowledge, theory, and care standards within the nursing interventions and outcomes framework and national patient safety goals. Identify and prioritize patient problems based on assessment data, safety considerations, goals, and preferences. Implement nursing care interventions to meet patient and family center health care needs, demonstrating competent skills, clinical judgment, and appropriate chain of command. Assess, conduct, and evaluate outcomes of patient and family teaching, reflecting sensitivity to age, learning needs, and cultural background. Evaluate care by performing regular reviews of patient/family responses, revising the plan in collaboration with team members, and preventing or intervening with adverse events. Serve as an advocate for patient and family, respecting rights and preparing for discharge, obtaining feedback to promote satisfaction. Work collaboratively with unlicensed assistive healthcare providers while meeting regulatory and legal requirements. Other Functions Demonstrate professional conduct and appearance and be accountable for actions and outcomes. Orient new healthcare team members and supervise students in assigned duties. Act as relief charge nurse when needed. Maintain professional competency through continuing education, licensure, and professional activities. Participate in evidence‑based practice activities such as journal clubs. Actively participate as a team member, resolve conflicts, and give and receive peer review and feedback. Perform duties cost‑effectively, avoiding wasteful resource use. Consistently uphold the Code of Ethics for Nurses. Maintain compliance with company policies, procedures, and conduct standards. Comply with HIPAA privacy and security requirements. Perform other duties as assigned. Job Requirements Education Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) from an accredited/approved school of nursing (Required). Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited/approved school of nursing (Preferred). Experience All new RN graduates will participate in the Nurse Residency program and must complete all activities. Licensure Current KY RN provisional licensure for the state of Kentucky (required to start). Certification Basic Life Support (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) (required). Job Competency Strong organizational skills to coordinate care of multiple patients simultaneously. Provide competent care based on nursing research, evidence‑based practice, and performance improvement. Evaluate patient and family care in relation to scientific knowledge and quality improvement. Exercise informed judgment at the competent level of practice. Know all aspects of the designated service line. Proactive – anticipate and plan for problems. Service Excellence – responsive, informative, and pleasant, providing accurate information. Organized – manage time effectively and prioritize tasks. Flexible – adapt direction as needed for the department. Critical Thinking – think through issues and identify appropriate options. Work Ethics – motivated, diligent, industrious, persistent, and finish tasks. Interpersonal – build effective relationships with employees, colleagues, management, and vendors. Team – collaborate, serve, help, lead, mentor, and take directions to achieve outcomes. Emotional Intelligence – maintain professionalism in emotionally charged situations. Self‑Awareness – reflect, understand limits, and seek assistance. Judgment – exercise discretion and due diligence when making decisions. Language Ability Must communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats. Adequate conversational English is required to take direction from management, understand job tasks, communicate with patients and coworkers, and follow safety guidelines and policies. Reasoning Ability Critically think through complex patient situations, process improvements, and evidence‑based practice to solve problems. Assist others in developing clinical reasoning skills. Computer Skills Competent in all computer applications required by the position. Capacity to learn other relevant systems and databases as needed.
