Building Engineer

This role provides day-to-day building engineering support for corporate office facilities, focusing on preventive maintenance and basic repairs across HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and general building systems. The Building Engineer ensures that building systems operate reliably and safely by performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting issues, and completing minor repairs and adjustments as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance on building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boilers, and mechanical equipment to ensure consistent and reliable operation.
  • Complete routine facilities maintenance tasks such as changing air filters, replacing lightbulbs, and performing minor electrical and plumbing work within scope.
  • Carry out general building repairs including fixing doors, sheetrock and drywall repairs, and other minor structural or interior maintenance tasks.
  • Assist with basic furniture moves and office setup as needed to support facility operations and occupant needs.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve basic mechanical and building system issues, escalating more complex problems to licensed contractors when necessary.
  • Coordinate and work alongside licensed HVAC, plumbing, and electrical contractors by preparing work areas, providing system information, and supporting follow-up tasks.
  • Maintain building engineering and maintenance records in a clear and organized manner, using basic computer skills to document work performed.
  • Conduct regular inspections of building systems and common areas to proactively detect maintenance needs and safety concerns.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, building occupants, and contractors to provide updates on maintenance activities and respond to service requests.
  • Follow established safety procedures and best practices while performing maintenance and repair tasks throughout the facility.

Essential Skills

  • Hands-on experience performing preventive maintenance on building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boilers, and mechanical equipment.
  • Practical building engineering or building mechanic experience in a corporate or facilities maintenance environment.
  • Ability to perform basic electrical work such as replacing light fixtures, bulbs, and minor components within standard safety guidelines.
  • Ability to perform basic plumbing tasks, including minor repairs and maintenance within a commercial building setting.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting skills for identifying and resolving issues with building systems and mechanical equipment.
  • Experience with general facility and building maintenance, including doors, sheetrock, drywall, and other interior repairs.
  • Good communication skills for interacting with building occupants, team members, and contractors.
  • Basic computer skills for documenting work, accessing maintenance systems, and communicating electronically.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience as a stationary engineer or in a similar building engineering role is highly beneficial.
  • Depth of expertise in at least one discipline such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical systems, combined with working knowledge of other areas.
  • Comfort working alongside licensed contractors for HVAC, plumbing, and electrical work and supporting their activities with basic tasks.
  • Experience in facilities maintenance within large commercial or corporate office environments.

Work Environment

This position is based in corporate office facilities, focusing on building operations and maintenance within a professional, commercial environment. The role follows a rotating schedule every two weeks across first and second shifts, Monday through Friday, with typical hours of 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., or 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. You work with building systems such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boilers, and general mechanical equipment, as well as tools and materials used for repairs to doors, sheetrock, drywall, and interior finishes. The environment involves regular interaction with facilities staff, contractors, and office occupants, and requires adherence to standard safety practices appropriate for building maintenance work.

Job Type & Location: This is a Contract position based out of East Greenwich, RI.

Pay and Benefits: The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $35.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
