About the Position

Position Summary - RN:

The Registered Nurse (RN) in Pittsburgh Public Schools provides  professional nursing services to students , ensuring a safe and healthy learning environment. The RN supports student health, manages chronic conditions, and promotes wellness across the school community.

Key Responsibilities:

Student Care

1. Provide  basic nursing care to students with acute or chronic health conditions
2. Assist with daily health needs such as: Feeding, Toileting, Personal hygiene
3. Monitor and report changes in student condition to the RN

Medication & Treatment

1. Administer  medications as prescribed (under RN supervision and district policy)
2. Perform routine procedures such as: Tube feedings, Catheter care, Blood glucose monitoring
3. Assist with care for students with  special medical needs

Support for Special Education

1. Work closely with students in  special education programs
2. Assist in implementing  Individualized Health Plans (IHPs) and support IEP/504 plans
3. Provide one-on-one care for medically fragile students if assigned

Documentation

1. Maintain accurate  health records and treatment logs
2. Document medications, treatments, and student interactions
3. Report health concerns to the supervising RN

Qualifications:

Candidates must demonstrate:

1. Competency in required nursing skills, including but not limited to G-tube feedings, seizure management, diabetes care, tracheostomy care, medication administration, and emergency response.
2. Experience with pediatric, school-aged, or medically complex individuals in any clinical setting (school-based experience preferred).
3. Ability to implement physician orders, Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs), and emergency care plans.
4. Experience supporting individuals with complex medical needs and developmental disabilities.
5. Experience supporting individuals with communication or mobility needs preferred.
6. Demonstrated ability to work independently, respond to medical needs in real time, and collaborate effectively with school teams and families within established communication protocols.

1. Reliable attendance and punctuality aligned with the PPS/Approved Private Schools calendar and assigned schedule.
2. Willingness to accept short-notice assignment changes, including school, student, and schedule adjustments.
3. Professional conduct, confidentiality, and effective communication.
4. Adherence to school-based communication protocols (no direct communication with families or sharing personal contact information).
5. Ability to complete accurate daily documentation (service logs and other required records).

Requirements

• Must have 1-2 years of experience supporting school children
• Must have Registered Nurse (RN) license for Pennsylvania or multistate
• Must have BLS certification
• Covid Vaccinated/Exemption
• Driver License
