Sr. Respiratory Care Practitioner

Position Overview At Houston Methodist, the Sr Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) is an experienced and competent therapist responsible for advanced procedures as assigned, including intubation, advanced pulmonary diagnostics, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), electromagnetic navigation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and more. The Sr RCP performs all duties assigned to a RCP, participates in developing and teaching in‑services, quality improvement initiatives, research programs, departmental committees, and serves as a mentor and resource to respiratory staff and students. The Sr RCP works independently, exercising sound judgment and executing above‑average clinical skills on challenging procedures and patient care situations, and may assume duties associated with coordinating activities within the respiratory department. FLSA Status Non‑exempt Qualifications Education Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated in the Licenses and Certifications section. Experience Four years of experience as a Respiratory Care Practitioner, with at least two in a critical care level; preferred at HMCCH. Neonatal experience preferred. Licenses and Certifications Required: RCP – licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner – State Licensure – Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, PSV. Required: RRT – Registered Respiratory Therapist (NBRC). Required: BLS – Basic Life Support (AHA) or Instructor. Required: ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support (AHA) or Instructor. Preferred: PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support (AHA) or Instructor. Preferred: NRP – Neonatal Resuscitation (AHA, AAP) within 90 days. Preferred: RRT‑ACCS – Adult Critical Care Specialty. Preferred: NPS – Neonatal/Pediatric Specialist. Preferred: CPFT – Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist. Preferred: RPFT – Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist. Preferred: RRT‑SDS – Sleep Disorder Specialty. Preferred: AE‑C – Certified Asthma Educator. Preferred: TTS – Tobacco Treatment Specialist. Preferred: RPSGT – Registered Polysomnographer Technologist. Knowledge and Abilities Demonstrates necessary skills and competencies to safely perform assigned tasks through ongoing assessments. Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English for patient safety. Communicates effectively with patients, physicians, family, and staff. Basic computer knowledge; operates multiple systems to maintain documentation. Works independently; handles challenging procedures and demonstrates sound judgment. Exhibits strong interpersonal and team‑player skills; delivers excellent customer service. Adapts to multiple priorities with minimal supervision and participates in problem‑solving. Service Essential Functions Provides patient teaching based on learning needs and assesses comprehension. Performs advanced treatments such as intubation, advanced pulmonary diagnostics, EBUS, electromagnetic navigation, ECMO, etc. Coordinates activities within the respiratory department and assumes duties in absence of a team lead. Helps drive improvement of patient satisfaction through service standards. Quality and Safety Essential Functions Assists physicians with tests, ensuring quality and reliability of results. Calibrates equipment and performs preventive maintenance; documents activities. Contributes to safety initiatives, identifies trends, and provides improvement recommendations. Finance Essential Functions Accurately documents patient care and respiratory activities; enters charges at service time. Uses resources efficiently; manages time, minimizes overtime, and prioritizes tasks.
