Building Inspector (Community Development) We are seeking a knowledgeable and detail‑oriented Building Inspector to join our team. JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for the effective enforcement of all building codes and ordinances; evaluates, interprets, and recommends, where appropriate, any necessary changes to the existing codes, to keep pace with all new and developing technology; assists any other department in an emergency that may require services; inspects construction projects and existing structures to assure conformity with adopted Building Code and Ordinances; maintains written records of code or ordinance changes, and coordinates these changes with the Building Supervisor, other appropriate divisions within the department, and other departments. JOB DUTIES: 1. Enforces all applicable adopted building codes. 2. Performs required inspections of construction and installation of materials and equipment in new and existing buildings and structures. Performs building and mechanical inspections of residential and commercial property. 3. Organizes personal daily work schedule and completes all assigned or scheduled inspections before the end of the work day. 4. Serves proper notice and seeks proper resolution when infractions of adopted codes and ordinances are observed. Researches and submits related code sections to substantiate violations. Appears at Village Administrative Adjudication Hearings as necessary to testify during enforcement hearings. 5. Compares job site plans/drawings for deviation from approved plans/drawings. 6. Posts proper notice of inspection at all buildings and structures. With the concurrence of the supervisor or management can post “Not approved for occupancy” or “Stop Work Orders”. 7. Investigates and seeks resolution of complaints between parties in matters related to the construction or maintenance of property. 8. Assists contractors, tradesmen, and the public regarding adopted ordinances and code requirements. 9. Attends special educational courses, and seminars to maintain ICC Certifications applicable to the position. 10. Performs other duties as assigned. SCHEDULE: The position involves regular and irregular hours necessary to provide emergency, after-hour work coverage. Work shifts are normally 8 hours in duration, but may be extended in the event of emergency, disaster, personnel shortage, workload, or work-in-progress. QUALIFICATION: 1. Education equivalent to a high school diploma. 2. A minimum of two years of experience in building construction, comprehensive knowledge of approved methods, materials, practices, and safeguards of building construction, and interpreting building construction prints and drawings. 3. Certified Building Inspection (ICC) certification is required and may be obtained within one year from the date of hire. 4. Possession of a valid driver’s license. 5. Proficiency with current computer technology, job-specific software, and customer service systems. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Exposure to extreme temperatures for prolonged periods, and/or abrupt changes to temperatures. 2. Exposure to petroleum products, chemicals, acids, fumes, dust, disagreeable odors, human, animal, or rodent fecal matter, exposure to rodents and/or pests, or inadequate ventilation. 3. Exposure to inclement weather conditions, standing water, mud, concrete placement, obstacles, and various construction materials. 4. Capable of climbing ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, stairwells, etc. 5. Capable of stooping, crawling, bending the body downward and forward by bending the spine at the waist, bending the body forward and downward by bending the leg and spine, turning the body at the waist, or turning the head at the neck in an unrestricted motion, moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet, extending arm(s) and hand(s) in any direction; seizing, holding, grasping, turning, with hands; picking, pinching, or otherwise working with fingers; maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, running, standing, or crouching. 6. Ability to judge distances to see objects where and as they are; ability to distinguish objects by the eye; ability to perceive the nature of sounds; ability to feel objects such as size, shape, or texture using fingers and fingertips; ability to distinguish varying degrees of temperatures. 7. Capable of withstanding heights, walking on roofs, maneuvering around and/or through obstacles, construction materials, manufactured materials, and equipment. 8. Capable of operating instruments, tools, and equipment that are job-related and/or as directed. 9. Necessity to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing. 10. Capable of conducting thorough plan/drawing reviews, proofreading, interpreting customer requests, and working with figures. 11. Capable of lifting 50 pounds and carrying materials and tools in the performance of assigned duties. 12. Ability to cope with numerous interruptions. 13. Ability to drive a personal vehicle to and from inspection sites. STARTING PAY RATE: STARTING PAY RATE: $38.17 – $42.47 per hour based on a 40-hour workweek. Salary dependent on qualifications. The salary range for this position is $38.17 – $55.35. This position is represented by a union; you may refer to the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement available on our website.
