Job Description The Deputy Sheriff, under occasional supervision, performs general law enforcement work for the Union County Sheriff’s Office; is primarily responsible for the prevention and detection of crime and the general enforcement of criminal laws of North Carolina and for the service of civil processes. Employee must exercise initiative and independent judgment in completing assigned tasks. Employee must also exercise tact, courtesy, and firmness in frequent contact with the public. The employee is subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement work. Responsibilities Answers complaint calls, investigates crimes and incidents according to federal law, state law, county ordinances and municipal ordinances. Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service to include, but not limited to, domestic violence calls, alarm calls, disturbance calls, 911 hang ups, wanted persons calls, attempt to locate persons for outside agencies, and suspicious persons/vehicles. Performs community policing as practiced and directed by the Sheriff of Union County. Patrols an assigned area of the county, inspects troublesome areas and businesses, both in vehicle and on foot as needed. Patrols the assigned town limits and complies with the contract executed by the town and as directed by the Sheriff of Union County. Displays proficiency in motor vehicle operations and basic map navigation. Gathers intelligence and data that can be used to prevent crime throughout the community. Interviews victims, witnesses, and suspects; gathers evidence; prepares cases for court. Performs basic crime scene processing and evidence preservation including, but not limited to, fingerprinting, basic photography, obtaining measurements, documenting crime scenes in written form and through data entry, maintains crime scene security and integrity with physical presence and in maintaining a crime scene log. Enforces traffic laws. Serves legal papers and various criminal and civil processes, using multiple sources to locate designated parties, explains briefly the meaning of papers served and makes arrests and issues citations as necessary. Completes case files to present to the District Attorney’s Office for prosecution. Attends any judicial proceedings required by their duties. Draws and executes search warrants. Conducts accident investigations as necessary. Serves as court bailiff and dispatch as necessary. Books inmates in and out of JMS, search inmates, secure personal property, photograph, interview inmates, complete medical, money, and property forms. Provides mental patient, juvenile, and prisoner transportation as directed. Cooperates with other law enforcement officers and other governmental agencies in conducting investigations and arrests. Follows guidelines and procedures as set forth by Sheriff’s policies and procedures. Performs other related duties as assigned. Education and Experience Requires a high school diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED). Bachelor’s degree preferred. Licenses or Certifications Possession of the following certificate is required: Basic Law Enforcement Certification from the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission. If the certificate is not held at time of assignment, it must be obtained within 1 year. Other Requirements Must be a minimum of 21 years of age. Possession of a valid driver’s license. Physical Demands Must be physically able to operate different types of law enforcement equipment and tools, safety equipment, firearms, communications equipment, office equipment, etc. Physical demands are in excess of those of sedentary work. Work involves walking, standing, running, climbing, reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, and jumping for varying periods of time. Must be physically able to occasionally and/or frequently lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects up to fifty (50) pounds. Must be able to move or drag up to one hundred and seventy-five (175) pounds. Must be able to defend one's self from assault and to restrain suspects of varying weights.
