Distinguished Engineers lead through technical contribution, operating as trusted advisors on our key technologies, platforms, and capability domains, creating clear communications, code samples, blog posts, and other materials to share knowledge. About the team: You will work with our Client Platforms team to define and drive the technical vision for Capital One's web platform ecosystem. You will lead architecture and standards for AI‑native web delivery, guide technical strategy for large‑scale platform migrations, and elevate developer experience across hundreds of engineers enterprise-wide. Key responsibilities: Articulate and evangelize a bold technical vision for your domain Decompose complex problems into practical and operational solutions Ensure the quality of technical design and implementation Serve as an authoritative expert on non‑functional system characteristics, such as performance, scalability, and operability Continue learning and injecting advanced technical knowledge into our community Handle several projects simultaneously, balancing your time to maximize impact Act as a role model and mentor within the tech community, helping to coach and strengthen the technical expertise and know‑how of our engineering and product community Define and drive the technical vision for Capital One’s web platform domain, spanning authenticated servicing, marketing/acquisition, and design system capabilities Lead architectural decisions for large‑scale platform integrations and migrations, ensuring long‑term platform health while meeting delivery commitments Establish AI‑native development standards and practices for web platforms, including agentic tooling, machine‑consumable architecture, and AI‑assisted delivery workflows Drive measurable improvement in developer experience and platform NPS across enterprise inner‑source contributors Partner with product, design, and engineering leadership to align technical strategy with business priorities across lines of business Basic Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree At least 9 years of experience in enterprise architecture and design patterns Software engineering and solution architecture Software specializations Full ML development lifecycle using AI and ML frameworks Designing and building distributed HPC and ML systems Mobile technology and frameworks (iOS, Android) Web technologies (Javascript, TypeScript, and SPA frameworks) Network engineering and architecture Data architecture Cloud computing (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud) Advanced networking concepts in routing, switching, and wi‑fi Cloud and software‑defined networking Security engineering and architecture Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field 10+ years of experience in software engineering and solution architecture 10+ years of professional experience coding in commonly used languages like Java, Python, Go, JavaScript/TypeScript, Swift, etc. 10+ years of professional experience in the full lifecycle of system development, from conception through architecture, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support Experience leading technical strategy for large‑scale web platforms serving millions of users Deep expertise in modern web frameworks (React, Angular), design systems, web performance, and accessibility Experience defining and driving engineering standards across distributed, inner‑source contributor models Familiarity with AI‑native development patterns, agentic tooling, or ML‑assisted software delivery Capital One will consider sponsoring a new qualified applicant for employment authorization for this position Salary ranges for this role are $314,800 – $359,300 (McLean, VA) and $286,200 – $326,700 (Richmond, VA).
