Occupational Therapist
Meets the patient's goals and needs and provides quality care by assessing and interpreting evaluations and test results. Determines occupational therapy treatment plans in consultation with physicians or by prescription. Helps patients develop or regain physical or mental functioning or adjust to disabilities. Implements programs involving manual arts and crafts, practice in functional, prevocational, vocational, and homemaking skills, activities of daily living, and sensorimotor, educational, recreational, and social activities. Directs aides, technicians, and assistants. Promotes maximum independence by selecting and constructing therapies according to individual physical capacity, intelligence level, and interest. Prepares patients for return to employment by consulting with employers and determining potential employee difficulties. Retrains employees and helps employers understand necessary physical and job result accommodations. Evaluates results of occupational therapy by observing, noting, and evaluating patient progress. Recommends and implements adjustments and modifications as needed. Completes discharge planning by consulting with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare workers. Contributes to patient care conferences. Ensures continuation of the therapeutic plan following discharge. Designs and instructs patients, families, and caregivers in home exercise programs. Recommends and/or provides assistive equipment and follow-up programs. Documents patient care services by charting in records. Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential. Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations. Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols. Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements. Follows manufacturer's instructions and troubleshoots malfunctions. Calls for repairs as necessary. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops. Reviews professional publications and participates in professional societies. Develops occupational therapy staff by providing information and conducting in-service training programs. Complies with federal, state, and local legal and certification requirements. Studies existing and new legislation and anticipates future legislation. Enforces adherence to legal requirements and advises management on needed actions. Contributes to the team effort by accomplishing related results as needed. Responsible to the Client Director. Works closely with the Client Manager and related clinical departments. Supervises rehabilitation aides. Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation is essential. Understanding human behavior, performance, individual differences, learning, and motivation is required. Knowledge of customer service principles and personal service is necessary. Proficiency in the English language, including composition and grammar, is required. Familiarity with curriculum and training design, teaching methods, and training effects measurement is important. Long periods of walking, bending, stooping, and squatting are expected. Ability to perform at a physical effort level equal to "medium" as defined by the Dictionary of Occupational Titles. Must be able to lift 50 pounds occasionally and 20 pounds frequently and sit for up to 2 hours at a time. Full range of movements of all major joints is necessary. Works indoors in a well-lighted, ventilated area. May be exposed to communicable diseases and hazardous materials. Possibility of injury from moving patients and heavy appliances. Actively promotes and observes safety and security procedures. Uses equipment and materials properly.
