Job Overview


Performs responsible technical work performing the analysis of drinking water and/or wastewater necessary for the monitoring and analysis of municipal water and wastewater operations and the Town's Pre-treatment program. Work is performed under regular supervision. An employee in this class performs a variety of physical, chemical, biological, and microbiological analyses associated with drinking water and wastewater treatment in a state certified laboratory. Work includes the collection and analysis of samples in accordance with Standard Methods for the Analysis of Water and Wastewater, completion of necessary reports and maintenance of records and files.

Essential Duties and Tasks

• Performs a variety of standardized and specialized laboratory tests and analysis of wastewater and drinking water samples to determine compliance with permits.
• Prepares solutions and reagents; performs TSS/Volatile, sets up Biological Oxygen Demand tests, Fecal Coliform tests, Dissolved Oxygen, Temperature, pH, Alkalinity, TKN, Conductivity, COD, Total Phosphorus, Nitrogen Ammonia, Nitrates (screening), Settled solids, Hardness, TRC levels, Total Coliform, and other water and wastewater tests as directed.
• Interprets laboratory tests and prepares required reports.
• Assists the lab supervisor in entering lab data into computer records accurately.
• Performs quality control program on equipment and supplies to ensure reliable test results; maintains laboratory equipment in proper operating order; and maintains state laboratory certification.
• Operates personal computer and tablet to input and manipulate data and accurately maintain records.
• Collects, pours off, preserves, and sends off samples at source for testing, programs sampling equipment.
• Collects and analyzes a variety of wastewater samples, water distribution samples, and pre-treatment samples.
• Cleans and sterilizes laboratory equipment and cleans the laboratory.
• Checks in received items and determines equipment and materials needed for purchasing.
• Coordinates and collects pre-treatment samples as necessary
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of modern laboratory techniques, materials, and equipment, including those used in chemical and biochemical analysis of water and wastewater
• Knowledge of the principles of biology, organic and inorganic chemistry.
• Knowledge of the application of information technology to the work of the plant.
• Ability to prepare laboratory reagents and assemble laboratory apparatuses for chemical and biological analysis.
• Ability to take water and wastewater samples and perform the necessary laboratory tests.
• Ability to prepare and keep accurate records and prepare reports.
• Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, superiors, and contracting agencies.
• Utilize HACH WIMS for lab data and process control data.
• Ability to follow Standards Methods for the Analysis of Water and Wastewater and Standard Operating Procedures.

Requirements


Physical Requirements

• Must be able to perform the basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up-to 10 pounds of force frequently or constantly to move objects. Must possess visual acuity necessary to inspect schematic drawings, prepare and analyze figures and data, and operate a computer terminal.
• The work is generally performed in inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposed to various hazards such as loud noises, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation. Employee is also subject to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. The work involves occasional moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g. working around moving parts or machines, irritating chemicals, etc. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or equipment such as masks, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shield.

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent with an (associate's degree in chemistry, Biology, or related field)
• Two (2) years of experience working in a laboratory setting or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Special Requirement

• Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
• Possession or ability to obtain Grade I Biological Wastewater Operator's certificate from State of North Carolina within 12 months of hire.
• Must maintain passing scores on state examinations for Wastewater Laboratory Analysis Certification and Bacteriological Methods for Analysis of Drinking Water
