Summary Meta is on the lookout for an exceptional Software Engineer with expertise in database internals to lead the evolution of our MySQL infrastructure that supports Meta's diverse range of products and platforms. This pivotal role involves architecting and enhancing critical database systems within our MySQL team, including the custom storage engine (MyRocks) and replication layer (MyRAFT), which facilitate billions of user interactions each day. You will tackle complex database-level challenges, craft a long-term technical strategy to align our relational database systems with Meta's AI aspirations, and empower engineering teams through advanced database knowledge and effective cross-functional collaboration. Responsibilities Drive the long-term technical vision and architecture for Meta's MySQL infrastructure, focusing on MyRocks and MyRAFT. Architect enhancements to support Meta's AI workloads and the demands of large-scale data processing. Identify and resolve intricate database performance, reliability, and correctness challenges across various layers such as storage, replication, and query execution. Lead the design and implementation of crucial database internals, prioritizing efficiency, correctness, and maintainability. Set up solid technical foundations, coding standards, and architectural patterns that enhance the consistency and speed of database engineering teams. Develop and apply testing frameworks, verification processes, and data integrity checks to prevent bugs and reliability issues at scale. Utilize AI tools and automation to optimize database performance and streamline development workflows. Collaborate with product, infrastructure, and platform engineering teams to translate complex database requirements into reliable technical designs, influencing cross-team roadmaps. Define and monitor database-level metrics, SLOs, and performance benchmarks that align engineering outputs with organizational goals. Mentor engineers across Meta on database design principles, optimization strategies, and storage engine internals. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience. 12+ years of experience in database systems engineering, focusing on the design and implementation of database internals such as storage engines and replication systems. Proven experience working in database teams, demonstrating deep knowledge of database architecture and internals. Experience managing large-scale database infrastructure across multiple teams or organizations with a track record of developing multi-year technical roadmaps. Ability to identify and resolve complex database performance, reliability, or correctness issues. Experience in defining engineering standards and architectural patterns for improving database system quality and consistency. Strong communication skills to convey complex database architecture and technical strategies effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences. Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated continuous learning in AI (e.g., prompt engineering, agent orchestration) and keeping abreast of emerging AI technologies. Experience leading database migrations or modernizing platforms in large-scale production environments. Knowledge of responsible AI implementation practices including risk assessment and bias mitigation. Experience integrating AI tools for optimizing workflows and achieving measurable improvements. Hands-on experience with database internals including storage engines. Familiarity with distributed database systems, consensus protocols (like Raft or Paxos), or the development of highly available data infrastructures. Experience applying AI and machine learning to enhance database optimization tasks like query optimization and automated performance tuning.
