JOB SUMMARY: The Laboratory Technician will assist LECOM faculty members with ongoing biomedical research. Duties include assisting with animal care and procedures, preparing buffers and solutions, conducting biomedical experiments and collecting data, and helping with general laboratory maintenance and operations. The Laboratory Technician is expected to be present on campus for 40 hours/week.

CHARACTERISTIC JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

• Provide support to faculty members to conduct experiments, including tissue preparation, molecular biology procedures (e.g., western blots, RT-PCR, immunolabeling), microscopy, cell culture, survey data design, data collection and analysis;

• Make solutions and reagents, proper disposal of biohazardous waste, and other general laboratory duties as requested by supervisor;

• Routine maintenance of laboratory equipment (e.g., autoclave, water purification system, cage washer, micropipettors );

• Take inventory and order supplies as needed; keep record of supplies ordered and receipt;

• Inventory chemicals and maintain up-to-date SDS database; assist with OSHA compliance;

• Maintain current CITI certification for working with animals (rats, mice) in a research setting;

• Assist faculty members in research procedures involving animals;

• Laboratory animal care (provide food and water, clean cages, weigh animals);

• Assist Director of Research with maintenance of databases for research reporting;

• Assist faculty members with manuscript and poster preparation;

• Attend, record meeting notes for, and type minutes for monthly Research Council meeting;

• Assist with organization and logistics of Interprofessional Research Day annually;

• Additional duties as assigned by the Director of Research;

• Promote and preserve the mission of LECOM;

• Act in a friendly, professional manner with faculty, students and visitors at all times;

• On-campus hours are 40/week;

• Abide by all safety and institutional regulations;

• Maintain confidentiality, professional appearance and pleasant demeanor;

• Meet with faculty members, on an as needed basis, to work on various assignments; and

• Other duties as needed / assigned to maintain efficient and effective daily operations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Education and experience equivalent to: a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Biology, Biochemistry, or a related Biological Sciences field, or a Bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor in Biology or Biochemistry is required. Previous research experience with animal handling and molecular biology techniques is highly desirable. Must be willing to work with small animals in a research setting. The successful applicant must complete CITI and OSHA training upon hiring and within the first week of the job start date (with certificates of completion sent to supervisor).
