Fitness Center Manager

St. Charles Community College

Founded in 1986, St. Charles Community College (SCC) has a reputation as one of the best two-year colleges in the state of Missouri. SCC's service area includes a six-county region with a population exceeding 540,000. SCC's main campus, located in Cottleville, has won architectural awards for its innovative, contemporary design. The college's Dardenne Creek Campus features the Center for Healthy Living and the Field to Table Institute. Opening Fall 2025, the Innovation West Campus located in Wentzville features the Regional Workforce Innovation Center. The Fitness Center Manager is responsible for the daily operation of the College's fitness center and attached gym. This position oversees facility operations, equipment maintenance, staffing, safety, and customer service while supporting a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for students, employees, student-athletes, and community members.

Reporting to the Director of Student Life, the Fitness Center Manager collaborates with Athletics, Exercise Science, and other campus partners to coordinate facility use and promote health, wellness, and student engagement.

Essential Functions

  • Manage the daily operations of the fitness center and attached gym, including scheduling, facility access, customer service, and overall readiness.
  • Recruit, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate staff and student employees.
  • Oversee inspection, maintenance, repair, replacement, and inventory of fitness equipment.
  • Develop, communicate, and enforce facility policies, safety procedures, and risk management practices.
  • Coordinate shared facility use with Athletics, Exercise Science, and other campus partners.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, inclusive, and well-maintained environment.
  • Assist with budgeting, purchasing, inventory control, reporting, and long-range planning.
  • Maintain operational records related to equipment, staffing, incidents, inspections, training, memberships, and facility usage.
  • Support wellness programming, user education, and initiatives that encourage health and engagement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Facility Operations

  • Oversee daily operation of the fitness center and gym, ensuring safe, efficient, customer-focused service.
  • Manage facility scheduling, access, opening and closing procedures, cleanliness, and readiness.
  • Monitor facility usage and space utilization to maximize safety and efficiency.
  • Enforce facility policies and maintain a welcoming environment for users of all fitness levels.

Equipment Management

  • Oversee inspection, preventive maintenance, repair, and replacement of fitness equipment.
  • Coordinate vendor services, warranty work, and equipment repairs.
  • Maintain equipment and supply inventories.
  • Recommend equipment purchases and replacement priorities based on operational needs, safety, and budget.
  • Ensure equipment is arranged to support safe, accessible, and effective use.

Safety and Risk Management

  • Establish and enforce safety standards, emergency procedures, and risk management practices.
  • Ensure compliance with College policies and applicable health and safety regulations.
  • Respond appropriately to incidents, accidents, injuries, and behavioral concerns.
  • Maintain first aid supplies, AEDs, emergency equipment, and required documentation.
  • Coordinate staff training in CPR/AED, first aid, emergency response, and safe equipment operation.

Staff Leadership

  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate staff and student employees.
  • Develop work schedules to ensure appropriate operational coverage.
  • Provide coaching, performance feedback, and professional development.
  • Promote outstanding customer service and consistent operational practices.

Budget and Administration

  • Assist with budget preparation and management for equipment, maintenance, supplies, and staffing.
  • Monitor expenditures and identify opportunities for operational improvements.
  • Prepare reports on facility usage, maintenance, staffing, and budget needs.
  • Maintain operational records, inspection logs, training documentation, and maintenance schedules.
  • Support long-range planning for facility improvements and equipment upgrades.

Collaboration

  • Coordinate facility scheduling and shared use with Athletics, Exercise Science, and other campus partners.
  • Support athletic training, academic instruction, and wellness programming while balancing the needs of all facility users.
  • Communicate effectively with faculty, coaches, staff, and community partners regarding scheduling and operational needs.
  • Ensure all shared use complies with College policies and safety standards.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of fitness center operations, equipment maintenance, and risk management.
  • Knowledge of applicable health, safety, and emergency response practices.
  • Ability to supervise, train, schedule, and develop employees.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with students, faculty, staff, Athletics, and community partners.
  • Skill in identifying and resolving operational issues while maintaining a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Proficiency in recordkeeping, budgeting, and operational planning.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Management, Recreation, Wellness, Physical Education, Health Promotion, or a closely related field.
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in fitness center, recreation, wellness, or athletic facility operations, including staff supervision and equipment management.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification or the ability to obtain certification within a specified timeframe after hire.
