Current City Employees may apply, but must have completed initial Civil Service probationary period and must have received a satisfactory performance rating on their last evaluation to receive promotional preference.

Entry Level Salary: $36,789

Pay Grade Range: $36,789 - $58,862 (Pay Grade 305)

Civil Service Exam: Training & Experience Questionnaire

Essential Functions

Completes City of Knoxville CDL Training program during initial probationary period; undergoes City CDL training course, trains alongside experienced equipment operators, and obtains Class A CDL.

Maintains community spaces through supporting the upkeep of parks, greenways, City-owned landscapes, and City rights of way; assists with mowing, trimming, and vegetation control using hand and power tools.

Perform manual labor including but not limited to dragging brush, construction work, tree/shrub planting, sweeping and other tasks.

Participates in litter control and environmental clean-up efforts to create welcoming public areas.

Prepares for and performs repairs on public facilities, infrastructure, and pedestrian pathways.

Assists in flagging and/or directing traffic around a work site.

Marginal Functions

Prepares for, makes repairs, and performs setup/takedown for City special events.

May operate departmental vehicles on a limited basis.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of safety hazards and precautions.

Ability to use various tools and equipment required for performing street maintenance activities.

Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions.

Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time in a variety of weather conditions (e.g., extreme heat or cold, rain, snow, etc.).

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Ability to successfully complete in-house training and TDOT tests for Class A Commercial Driver's License.

Physical Requirements

This position consists of very heavy work, requiring the incumbent to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 50 pounds (or more) of force frequently, in order to lift/carry, push/pull, or otherwise move objects. Mental Requirements

This position uses some training and/or experience to select from a limited number of solutions the most appropriate actions or procedures in performing the job. Minimum Requirements

Graduation from an accredited high school or GED equivalent.

Possession of a valid Class D driver's license.

Must obtain Class A Commercial Driver's License within the probationary period.
