Requisition 39951: 2026 Electrical Apprentice Signal Trainee (Louisville, KY) Primary Purpose Primary Purpose: Apprentice Signal Trainees will be trained to perform the duties of Signal Workers. Signal Workers are an important link between ensuring compliance to FRA regulations and customer satisfaction while achieving the safest and most efficient railroad operations. Key Responsibilities Perform FRA regulatory tests and inspections of signal systems and crossings. Install, repair, maintain, test, and inspect equipment such as signal lights, switch machines, electrical switch locks, switch circuit controllers, crossing warning devices, and automated classification yards. Install, repair, maintain, test, and inspect signal systems including Automatic Block, Traffic Control, Positive Train Control, cab signal, and interlocking systems. Perform cable locates, painting, and housekeeping of signal housings and equipment; climb and troubleshoot signal structures and make electrical connections. Use a wide variety of hand tools, on‑track high‑rail equipment, and test instruments. Perform construction duties, including digging holes and trenches to lay cables, wiring apparatus, setting foundations, and installing equipment. Role requires travel and on‑call availability, including weekends. Apprentice Signal Trainee Training Program Successful applicants will participate in a 52‑week paid apprenticeship program that includes in‑class theory, laboratory work, and hands‑on field training. Program schedule: Weeks 1‑3: Signal Training‑1 (McDonough, GA) Weeks 4‑16: On‑the‑Job Signal Construction Gang Weeks 11‑19: Signal Training‑2 (McDonough, GA) Weeks 20‑40: On‑the‑Job Signal Maintenance Training Weeks 41‑43: Signal Training‑3 (McDonough, GA) Weeks 44‑52: Additional On‑the‑Job training In‑class portion consists of three 3‑week sessions in McDonough, GA (mandatory). Apprentices must pass periodic tests; failure may result in rejection of the employment application. Upon successful completion, apprentices are placed on the seniority district roster and may bid on Signalman or Signal Maintainer roles for designated districts. Probation period 90 days; apprentice must secure a Class A CDL within 111 days of hire. Rate of Pay First 3 weeks: $1,200.00 Second period (130 days): $36.85 Medical Benefits Eligibility begins 1st day of the second month after hire (during training). Plan: 80/20 for employee, spouse, and eligible dependents. Union benefits (Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen – BRS) available after transition from trainee status. Medical plan: Managed or 85/15. $20,000 life insurance. 401(k) begins first day of employment. After 1st year of service: eligible for dental and vision coverage.
