Peer Support Specialist II

Position Overview Peer Support Specialist II – Full‑time / Non‑Exempt – Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm – Durham, NC – $20.00/hour. Specialty Certfication Successful completion of Peer Employment Training and obtaining Certification as a Peer Support Specialist are required. Summary of Job The Peer Support Specialist II provides support and recovery training to individuals receiving services. The role assists in creating a recovery environment, acts as an advocate for the needs and rights of every individual, and helps participants with resume building, job searching, and recovery planning. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Guest Care & Advocacy Provides coaching and mentoring to peer support staff through role modeling and guidance. Acts as a mentor for new team members and facilitates training opportunities for professional development. Provides support for participant wellness, groups, and other recovery‑strengthening activities. Ensures all program elements and expectations are being met. Provides peer support to engage participants in a recovery partnership and helps identify their hopes, dreams, and desired solutions. Teaches recovery and life skills using tools and resources. Models hope, personal responsibility, and self‑advocacy, demonstrating how recovery goals can be met respectfully. Cultivates connectedness in the person’s life with themselves, others, and their environment. Compliance & Risk Management Completes clinical notes as required. Facilitates documentation, transfers, and transition of guest care. Stays current on federal and state regulations, laws, and Recovery Innovations policies. Adheres to Recovery Innovations compliance standards, Code of Conduct, and Conflict of Interest Policies. Cross Functional Collaboration Introduces participants to the clinical team and serves as their point of contact. Coordinates with the individual’s clinical team and other supports to arrange services or resources. Coordinates transportation to external resources and facilitates community integration. Builds and maintains positive working relationships with team members. Additional Duties Creates peer‑level curriculum and facilitates group activities. Performs other related duties as assigned. Outpatient Programs Assists participants with resume building, job searching, and recovery planning. Provides recovery support services in partnership with community team members. Supports individuals in maintaining healthy living within the community. Job Requirements Education/Licenses Successful completion of Peer Employment Training and obtaining Peer Support Specialist certification. High School Diploma or equivalent. Experience Lived experience with mental health and/or substance use services. Two (2) years of full‑time behavioral health experience. Additional training in peer‑related topics. Experience in community navigation, resume writing, curriculum development, and family peer support. Skills Basic computer skills. Ability to teach and train recovery information and tools. Effective communication skills. Must pass de‑escalation training as defined by state requirements. Driving Requirements Must meet all requirements outlined in Recovery Innovations driving policy if driving is required. Non‑driver must sign the Non‑Driver Attestation form. Outpatient Programs Experience in community navigation, resume writing, and family peer support. Miscellaneous Requirements Must be at least 18 years old unless state regulations specify a different minimum age. Travel required based on business needs. Maintain confidentiality per HIPAA guidelines. Second‑chance employer; must pass seven‑year background check, substance abuse testing, education verification, and fingerprinting clearance if applicable. Direct Service Competency Checklist is completed during new‑hire onboarding. Physical Demands Work may include close visual focus and repeated wrist, hand, or finger motions. Frequent sitting, standing, walking, handling, and manual dexterity are required. Use of corrected vision and color vision may be needed. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds is necessary. Work Environment May work in an office or behavioral health facility and may interact with individuals who are agitated and/or confused. State‑Specific Addenda Arizona Must be 21 years or older. Must attend court hearings when listed as a witness on a petition. California Must obtain Certified Medi‑Cal Peer Support Specialist Certification (CMPSS) within 30 days of hire. Two (2) years of full‑time behavioral health experience preferred for the Art Works Program. Art-related experience required for the Art Works program. Louisiana Must be 24 years or older. North Carolina – Peer Navigator Proof of valid and unrestricted driver’s license. Proof of up‑to‑date vaccination records; if unavailable, must complete and provide before hire. Must provide proof of own personal auto insurance with specified coverage limits. Washington Additional state registration for Registered Agency Affiliated Counselor (AAC).
