About the Scituate School Department The Scituate School Department is a public school district serving approximately 1,200 students across five schools: three elementary schools (Clayville, Hope, and North Scituate Elementary Schools, PreK–5), Scituate Middle School (grades 6–8), and Scituate High School (grades 9–12). Our dedicated educators, support staff, and administrators work as a professional learning community, sharing responsibility to ensure that every student is engaged, challenged, and supported in reaching their full potential. For additional information, please visit Summary of Responsibilities Provide student‑specific nursing support during the school day as directed by the District, delegated in accordance with law, and required by the student’s IEP, health plan, physician orders, or related educational documentation. Serve as the assigned one‑to‑one paraprofessional for the student throughout the school day and school‑related programming, as directed. Assist the student with access to instruction, transitions, mobility, safety, organization, communication, behavior support, self‑help skills, and participation in the school environment, consistent with the IEP. Monitor the student for health, safety, medical, behavioral, and educational needs and promptly communicate concerns to appropriate certified and administrative staff. Implement student‑specific instructional, behavioral, safety, and health‑related plans under the direction of appropriate professional staff. Maintain appropriate records, logs, data, and documentation as required by the District. Collaborate with teachers, nurses, therapists, special educators, related service providers, and administrators regarding the student’s daily functioning and needs. Attend training sessions, meetings, and professional development required by the District or necessary to meet student needs, consistent with the collective bargaining agreement. Assist with toileting, feeding, lifting, positioning, transfers, and other physical care needs when required by the student’s program and when permitted by law, training, and District direction. Utilize de‑escalation, health and safety, and crisis response procedures as trained and directed by the District. Perform other student‑specific duties reasonably related to the dual nursing/paraprofessional role, provided such duties are lawful and within the employee’s credentials and training. Assist with the needs of the building when the student is absent. Job Requirements Nature of Position: Temporary, student‑specific position created to implement the services required by a particular student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). The position shall exist only for as long as the assigned student requires such services. Reports To: Building Principal or designee, in consultation with the Director of Special Education, school nurse teacher, and other administrators as designated by the District. Work Year / Schedule: Work year, workday, and hours shall be established by the District consistent with student need, the applicable collective bargaining agreement, and the student’s educational program. Qualifications: Current and valid Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in good standing; Current and valid Paraprofessional or Paraprofessional certification, approval, or credential as required by the District, RI Department of Education, and applicable law, maintained in good standing; Demonstrated ability to work with students with disabilities and to implement IEP‑directed services; Ability to maintain confidentiality and protect student records; Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, related service providers, administrators, nurses, and families; Additional certifications or clearances as required by law or the student’s IEP. Limitations on Duties: Employee shall perform only those duties permitted by law, regulation, licensure, certification, District policy, and the student’s educational and health‑related plans. Physical and Environmental Demands: Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, movement throughout the school day; Ability to escort and physically assist a student in various school settings; Ability to lift, transfer, or assist a student and/or equipment; Ability to respond quickly to student health, behavioral, or safety needs; Possible exposure to biological hazards, bodily fluids, toileting needs, and medical or emergency situations.
