Staff Mechanical Design Engineer

Intuitive Surgical seeks a Staff Mechanical Design Engineer to lead design and development of single-port surgical accessories for the da Vinci robotic system. The role combines sustaining existing products with new product development, focusing on performance optimization, manufacturability, and reliability in a regulated medical device environment.

Responsibilities

• Drive mechanical design optimization for performance, manufacturability, and reliability of SP Accessories
• Develop product drawings and specifications for high-volume manufacturing processes in regulated environment
• Perform root cause analysis and implement solutions for design, manufacturing, and field issues
• Conduct risk analyses, FMEA documentation, and verification/validation testing per design control processes
• Mentor engineers and support production transfer through cross-functional collaboration

Requirements

• BS in Mechanical Engineering; MSME preferred or equivalent with relevant experience
• 12+ years hardware product design experience (8+ with graduate degree)
• Proficiency with SolidWorks CAD and GD&T; strong tolerance analysis skills
• Expertise in high-volume manufacturing: injection molding, thermoforming, extrusion, machining
• Deep knowledge of plastics, silicones, polyurethanes, and material selection principles
• Medical device or regulated industry experience required
• Systems-level thinking with ability to manage cross-functional interfaces
