Join UPMC Hamot's pharmacy team as a Pharmacy Technician, Senior and play a vital role in supporting safe, efficient, and high-quality medication use processes. In this advanced technician role, you will contribute to daily pharmacy operations, medication distribution, and medication safety initiatives while collaborating with pharmacists and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to optimize patient care.

Schedule:

• Full-time, 40 hours per week
• Primarily day shift schedule with evening coverage as needed
• Weekend and holiday rotation required (approximately four weekends per eight-week schedule block and three holidays per year)
• Flexibility required to support operational needs

Preferred Qualifications:

• Three years of pharmacy technician experience required
• PTCB Certification required
• Acute care or hospital pharmacy experience preferred
• Pennsylvania State Pharmacy Technician registration preferred
• Experience with automated dispensing systems (e.g., Omnicell) preferred
• Knowledge of medication safety practices, inventory management, and regulatory requirements
• Strong communication, collaboration, and customer service skills

Eligible candidates may receive a $5,000 sign-on bonus with a two-year work commitment.

The Senior Pharmacy Technician demonstrates proficiency in complex pharmacy functions, including IV admixture preparation, cytotoxic and TPN compounding, medication distribution, and pharmacy information system utilization. Additional responsibilities may include specialized functions such as controlled substance management, RobotRX operation, operating room pharmacy support, and medication packaging activities. All services are performed in compliance with Department of Health, State Board of Pharmacy, and The Joint Commission standards.

Title and compensation will be determined based on education and experience.

Responsibilities:

• Filling:
• Assist in filling medication orders through correct labeling, counting and stocking practices. Initial and date products as required.
• Possesses the ability to work and instruct in the Sterile Product area preparing TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition) solutions with a high level of skill and expertise.
• Demonstrates understanding of the calculations involved in nutritional solution preparation.
• Consistently has the ability to work and instruct in the Sterile Product area preparing cytotoxic and hazardous drugs (e.g. chemotherapy) using proper aseptic technique with a high level of skill and expertise.
• Distribution:
• Participate in the distribution of medication including medication cassettes, emergency medication carts and the delivery of controlled substances per department policy and state and federal requirements
• Retrieve medications that have been discontinued and return (and credit if necessary) them to the appropriate pharmacy area.
• Develop and maintain positive and productive service relationships during medication distribution process.
• Investigational:
• Assist in the procurement, accountability, storage, preparation and distribution of investigational and study drugs.
• General:
• Demonstrate a high level of accuracy and skill in maintaining controlled substance records and the distribution process for controlled substances.
• Assist in training other Pharmacy Technicians in determining their ability to function in ALL areas of the Pharmacy department.
• Provide and received information (via telephone, person-to-person, or written) to hospital personnel, patients and visitors.
• Refer all drug information questions to Staff Pharmacists.
• Ensure that all medications in all areas have been safely and securely stored according to Department of Health, The Joint Commission, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations.
• Audit and maintain accurate records for controlled substances.
• Assure that all such drugs are stored and dispensed in compliance with Federal, State, and Department Regulations
• Develop and maintain a clean, organized, and adequately stocked work environment.
• Use computer skills to process and maintain all patient information and records.
• Maintain all pertinent documentation as required. This may include eye wash logs, refrigerator logs, perpetual inventory logs etc.

• Procure and maintain adequate inventory levels on daily basis in applicable areas such pharmacy medication stock rooms, automated medication carousels, and automated dispensing machines.
• Maintain and update automated med stations, unit and department stock, emergency boxes, and crash carts.
• Participate in departmental quality improvement activities in order to continually improve and evaluate pharmaceutical care as reflected by operational and patient care indicators.
• Provide direction and leadership for ALL technical aspects associated with medication preparation in the pharmacy department.
• Assist in coordinating daily activities, organizing duties and responsibilities, and developing the workflow of the technical staff to maximize productivity in MULTIPLE areas.
• Demonstrate competency in performing high skill level activities in MULTIPLE areas such as sterile products/IV admixtures, controlled substances, robot operation, packaging operations, and operating room.
• Prepare reports as required to support pharmacy activities.
• Perform and document regular cleaning and maintenance activities of ALL areas.
• Perform assigned job responsibilities with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Demonstrate a service orientation toward patients, staff and visitors.
• Conveys a positive, professional image at all times.
• Demonstrate a high level of knowledge understanding the laws associated with the purchasing and distribution of controlled substances.

Completion of high school diploma or equivalent or Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program AND Three years of previous pharmacy technician experience

Pharmacy Technician Certification required. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

• Pharmacy Technician Certification required
• PA State Board of Pharmacy Registration required for all PA locations
• If working in a New York facility, must also be registered with the New York State Board of Pharmacy
• If an individual has a Pharmacy Intern license, they do not need to register with the State of PARxPartners
• specific BU criteria may also include Driver's License and Automotive insurance
• Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT)
• PA Pharmacy Tech Registration

Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
