Housekeeping Aid (Leader)

Summary This position is located within the Environmental Management Services Division of a VA Medical Center. It is supervised by the Housekeeping Supervisor or designee and performs both janitorial and custodial services at the VA Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Qualifications Applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement – 06/03/2026. A specific length of training and experience is not required, but evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality is required to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties. Applicants will be rated according to the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. The application is first screened against a prescribed screen‑out element (usually question 1 of the online questionnaire). Eligible applicants are then rated against the remaining job elements: Follow Directions, Physical Strength and Agility, Special Aptitude – Housekeeping, and Experience. Experience is defined broadly to include paid, unpaid, and volunteer work, such as participation in National Service programs or community organizations. Volunteer work may provide valuable training that translates directly to paid employment and will receive credit. Part‑time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent. Physical requirements include occasional bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Approximately 40 percent of the time is spent standing, 40 percent walking, and 20 percent sitting. The work may involve exposure to cleaning chemicals, bodily fluids, and communicable disease. Protective clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE) are required for certain tasks. The work is performed in a variety of areas, including operating rooms, treatment rooms, examination rooms, imaging rooms, wards, and other public and administrative areas. Duties Lead housekeeping operations throughout the VA Medical Center Supervise housekeeping aides and other assigned staff Lead three or more employees in performing housekeeping tasks to maintain clean, organized, and sanitary conditions across all units Implement EMS and Medical Center policies, VA regulations, and supervisor instructions, and verify completion of assigned work Coordinate projects with nurses and area supervisors to ensure timely completion Set task pace, demonstrate techniques, and provide proper usage guidance for cleaning supplies and equipment Engage employees to provide purpose, direction, and motivation while training them in proper procedures and techniques Report employee progress, recommend improvements, and ensure safety and compliance Perform full range of housekeeping duties as needed Clean horizontal and vertical surfaces in outpatient surgery, outpatient clinics, central sterile, clean rooms, patient areas, laboratories, pharmacies, offices, support areas, isolation rooms, storage rooms, corridors, stairwells, toilet rooms, shower rooms, and other Medical Center areas Use proper procedures in dust mopping, damp mopping, emptying waste receptacles, washing walls, cleaning light fixtures and surfaces, refilling toilet tissue, paper towels, and soap dispensers Make beds and turn mattresses Lead textile distribution, inventory, uniform management, and Patient Assistance Program activities as required Provide on‑the‑job training to all assigned employees Identify and recommend remedial training for employees based on observations Move furniture and set up conference rooms for meetings, trainings, or other events as needed Scrub, strip, refine, and polish floors using hand‑operated and industrial equipment Perform other duties as assigned Work schedule: 2:30 PM to 11 PM (Days to be determined) #J-18808-Ljbffr
