RN Neuro ICU Stepdown

The Registered Nurse (RN) ICU Stepdown in the Neurosurgical Unit provides specialized nursing care to patients with complex neurological conditions including brain tumors, spinal malformations, epilepsy, and neuroendovascular procedures. The role involves working in a mixed-acuity environment, delivering hemodynamic and neurological monitoring, managing advanced neurocritical care equipment, and collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes. This position requires a minimum of two years of stepdown or progressive care unit nursing experience with a strong focus on neurological and stroke patient care. Responsibilities:

• Provide nursing care to neurosurgical patients in a mixed-acuity setting including an 8-bed high-acuity stepdown unit.
• Perform frequent neurological assessments including Q1 neuro checks.
• Manage and monitor external ventricular drains (EVDs), lumbar drains, and subdural drains.
• Administer specialized treatments such as 3% normal saline and Cardene drips.
• Manage arterial lines and care for patients with carotid endarterectomy, aneurysm coiling/clips, deep brain stimulation (DBS) insertion, and ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunts.
• Provide seizure management and monitor telemetry.
• Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate patient care.
• Perform charge nurse duties, on-call, and callback responsibilities as needed.

• Current Registered Nurse license in New York State (NYS license only accepted).
• Minimum of 2 years of Stepdown or Progressive Care Unit (PCU) nursing experience.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
• National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
• Experience in high acuity stroke/neurosurgery patient care and telemetry monitoring.

• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification from AHA.
• Recent experience using EPIC electronic medical record (EMR) system.

• Rotating day, evening, and night shifts including weekends and holidays.
• On-call and callback duties required.
• Charge nurse responsibilities as assigned.

• Work schedule consists of 36 or 48 hours per week with rotating shifts covering days, evenings, and nights.
