Custodial Associate

Job Title: Custodian – UC Santa Cruz Silicon Valley Campus Location: UCSC Silicon Valley Campus, 3175 Bowers Ave., Santa Clara, CA 95054 Job Summary Under direct supervision and as part of the Building Operations team, the incumbent performs cleaning duties in offices, workstations, classrooms, computer laboratories, conference rooms and common areas of the campus. Responsibilities include cleaning, recycling, and general maintenance of restrooms, shower rooms, breakrooms, lounges, hallways and other public areas, individually or as part of a team, to maintain a clean, safe and welcoming environment for staff, faculty, students and visitors. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience. Schedule Information Full-time, Fixed Percentage of Time: 100%, 40 Hours per Week Days of the Week: Tuesday – Saturday, 12:00pm – 8:30pm Shift Includes: Day, Evening, Weekend Job Duties 75% – General Daily Cleaning Maintain hallways, stairway corridors, stairs, lounges, outside steps, terraces, entrances; sweep, mop, scrub, dust, vacuum carpets, clean window sills, wash glass and trim. Clean and disinfect restrooms and shower rooms daily; replenish supplies and dispose of trash with cleaning solutions. Empty waste, recycling, mixed paper, and compost receptacles. Keep custodial supply closets clean and stocked; report needed repairs. Rearrange or move furniture as necessary for custodial work. Provide team member support in other areas as needed. 15% – Periodic Cleaning Clean woodwork, light fixtures, venetian blinds, radiators, grills, ducts, walls, blackboards, washing machines, dryers. Wax or polish furniture. Spot‑clean carpets, upholstered furniture, draperies as needed. Interact with campus staff or visitors regarding duties. 10% – Building Security, Safety Practices and Other Lock/unlock buildings as instructed; carry out emergency procedures and evacuate if necessary. Handle chemicals safely; dilute and use cleaning compounds per labels. Participate in staff safety training. Follow all safety procedures, attend required training, and report accidents. Required Qualifications Knowledge and safe use of custodial equipment (vacuum cleaner, floor scrubber, polisher) and familiarity with building safety procedures, equipment and chemicals. Interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with a diverse campus population. Ability to work independently, meet deadlines with minimal supervision. Service‑oriented mindset, adaptable to changing priorities and interruptions. Ability to read and follow written instructions in English and use manuals. Strong prioritization skills to meet daily schedule and manage workload. Preferred Qualifications High School Degree or equivalent. Special Conditions of Employment Background check and employment misconduct disclosure required. Must operate cleaning equipment, use chemicals, and handle physical tasks up to 60 lbs. Work under variable temperature conditions, exposing to odors, noise, dust, and hazards. Work all scheduled hours on‑site; occasional evenings, weekends, and overtime. Complete mandatory training and comply with Vaccination Policy.
