Staff Aquifer Environmental Scientist

Job Summary Conducts activities that assess and monitor land uses that protect and enhance the quality and quantity of water in the Edwards Aquifer. Essential Job Functions Functions as the technical lead for the EAA’s Aquifer Sustainability Program (ASP). Develops and implements projects designed to restore ecological function of the land surface to improve potential contributions to water quality and quantity from surface runoff. Takes a lead role in developing project work scopes both internally and externally for the program, provides technical leadership and mentoring to staff as needed, and may coordinate staff assignments on research-related work efforts within the program. Takes a lead role in providing technical information to supervisor as it relates to the program area. Contributes to the annual planning and budgeting process. Works with supervisor to develop and participate in external workshops, educational presentations, or other similar external messaging associated with the program directed at the public, stakeholders, and other governmental agencies. Efficiently prepares correspondence, technical reports and presentation materials as needed. Effectively communicates with landowners, stakeholders, staff, and outside agencies. Provides general and technical information to the public as requested. Works under general direction and direct guidance from the supervisor on matters related to overall objectives, critical issues, new concepts, and policy positions. Works autonomously while complying with policies, practices, processes, and procedures. Goals are generally communicated in solution or project goal terms. Exercises discretion and independent judgment on significant matters. May provide a leadership role for the work group due to extensive knowledge in the area of specialization. Works collaboratively with others. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Requirements Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, geology, hydrology, civil engineering, or closely related field plus minimum of ten years of relevant experience or master’s degree plus eight years relevant experience. Proficient in use of personal computers, word processing, spreadsheet, and Microsoft office suite. Strong research, analytical, technical, problem solving and investigative skills. Effective oral, written, and organizational skills. Ability to exercise initiative, independent judgment, and responsibility. Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle. Familiar with vehicle and wilderness safety protocols. Physical Requirements Job performance may require listening, seeing, sitting, talking, reaching, pulling or pushing; frequent lifting, balancing, carrying, grasping, handling of items and equipment weighting up to 50 pounds; occasional standing, stooping, bending, crawling and moderate to heavy walking in rough terrain requiring a high level of physical exertion; some irregular hours and long workdays and moderate levels of stress. Job may consist of up to 50% work in an office environment and 50% work outside that includes exposure to extremes in weather, rough terrain such as brush, rocks, and hills, and may also include exposure to hazards such as chemicals, insects, wildlife, and snakes.
