POSITION DESCRIPTION | PEER SUPPORT SPECIALIST

Recovery Support Supervisor or Program Director

Position Summary

Uses lived recovery experience and recognized peer support practices to promote hope, self-direction, recovery engagement, and community connection.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide individual and group peer recovery support within the peer role.

• Appropriately share lived recovery experience to encourage hope and self-determination.

• Assist clients in identifying recovery goals and developing practical recovery action plans.

• Connect clients with mutual-aid meetings, recovery community resources, education, and employment supports.

• Support recovery engagement and transitions from treatment to community-based supports.

• Identify and promptly report safety concerns to qualified clinical personnel.

• Document peer services, contacts, and outcomes accurately while maintaining boundaries.

Minimum Qualifications

• Lived recovery experience consistent with applicable peer credential standards.

• Missouri-recognized peer support credential when required for the assigned service or funding source.

• Education, training, and supervision meeting the applicable credential and program requirements.

Scope and Accountability

Peer staff do not independently diagnose, provide psychotherapy, determine clinical level of care, or perform licensed duties without separate authorization.

Performance Expectations

Engagement, recovery goal progress, community connections, accurate records, and fidelity to peer support scope.

All personnel must maintain confidentiality, protect client rights, complete required orientation and training, follow Paradigm policies, and meet applicable Missouri DMH background screening and competency requirements. Duties must remain within each employee’s credentials, training, supervision, and authorized scope of practice.
