Job Summary:
Under general supervision, performs technical work in the operation and maintenance of the water treatment plant and associated systems. This position is responsible for monitoring, adjusting, and maintaining treatment processes to ensure the production and delivery of safe, potable water in compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations. The Operator C typically works assigned shifts and does not have supervisory responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or GED required.
- Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of experience in water treatment plant operations or related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
3. Licenses/Certifications:
Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Class “C” Surface Water Operator License required
Valid Texas Driver’s License
Essential Job Functions:
Operates and monitors water treatment processes including raw water flow, sedimentation, filtration, and pumping systems
Operates and maintains plant equipment such as pumps, motors, valves, and electrical systems
Monitors SCADA systems and instrumentation to ensure proper system performance and regulatory compliance
Adjusts chemical feed systems and maintains proper dosage levels to meet water quality standards
Performs laboratory testing and sampling in accordance with state and federal regulations
Maintains system pressure, tank levels, and distribution system performance
Records operational data, logs, and reports accurately and in compliance with regulatory requirements
Performs routine maintenance, inspections, and minor repairs on equipment and facilities
Responds to customer inquiries and assists with distribution system monitoring activities
Maintains plant cleanliness, grounds, and housekeeping standards at treatment facilities and remote sites
Performs other related duties as assigned
Knowledge of:
Water treatment plant operations, processes, and equipment
Chemical handling, dosing, and safety procedures
Laboratory sampling and water quality testing methods
Federal and state regulations related to potable water (EPA, TCEQ)
City policies and procedures
Skills in:
Operating and troubleshooting water treatment equipment and systems
Interpreting data from SCADA systems and instrumentation
Performing laboratory analysis and maintaining accurate records
Communicating effectively with staff, supervisors, and the public
Time management and prioritization of operational tasks
Physical Demands/Work Environment:
Work is performed in both indoor plant and outdoor environments with moderate to high noise levels. Subject to standing, walking, climbing ladders and stairs, bending, reaching, and lifting materials up to 100 pounds occasionally. Exposure to chemicals, mechanical equipment, and varying weather conditions. May be required to wear personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection, and respond to emergency situations. Interaction with employees and the public may involve varying levels of stress.
