divh2Liquid Barge Technician/h2pThe Liquid Barge Technician plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and compliant operation of tank barges by conducting thorough inspections before and after cargo operations. These inspections focus on verifying cleanliness, assessing mechanical functionality, and identifying any safety or regulatory issues that could impact operations. The position demands strong mechanical aptitude, keen attention to detail, and a solid understanding of barge systems and applicable environmental and safety standards. By maintaining high standards of inspection and compliance, the Liquid Barge Technician helps safeguard personnel, protect the environment, and support the efficient movement of cargo./ppMajor Responsibilities/pulliConduct inspections of tank barges, including but not limited to:/liulliInspection of voids./liliReading and understanding barge documents./liliInspect all other working equipment on the barge./liliInspect and verify barge cleanliness prior to leaving the cleaning facility./liliStarting of barge engine and inspection for defects./liliExperience locating hull damage, void tank inspections, and all fittings including winches./li/ulliFamiliarity with barge equipment and ability to perform minor preventative and corrective maintenance on barge pumps, pump engines, boilers, and heaters./liliKnowledge of the vapor recovery systems on tank barges including all piping and pressure vacuum relief valve (PVRV)./liliKnowledge of the functions/operations of the cargo tanks, cargo piping, cargo tank valves, pump cans, check valve, pressure relief on pumps and hot oil heaters./liliMaintain and ensure that decks are clear from spills (cargo or engine fluids). Assist as needed with barge operations./liliMaintain a clean and safe working environment that complies with environmental guidelines and policies./liliStay compliant with all regulatory bodies as it applies to the work that is being completed and with all safety rules and policies./liliUtilize proper PPE while performing work on barges./liliThis position may involve travel to multiple locations./li/ulpOther/pulliPerform other duties as required and directed by management./liliCarry out the Business Philosophy, Code of Conduct, Mission and Vision of Illinois Marine Towing, Inc. and Canal Barge Company, Inc./li/ulpTraits and Attributes/pulliAttention to detail: Demonstrates a high level of accuracy when performing inspections, reading documentation, and reporting findings. Demonstrates reliability in both independent and team-based work./li/ulpOrganizational Relationship/ppThe Liquid Barge Technician is appointed by and reports to the Tank Barge Ops Foreman./ppExperience/Education/pulliHigh School Diploma is required./liliHold a valid Drivers License./liliExtensive hands-on experience with barges, familiarity with pumps, compressors, gauges, and tanks./liliBasic computer knowledge./liliMust be able to pass CBC Barge Readiness Course./liliAbility to properly gauge tanks./liliPossess a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)./li/ulpPhysical Requirements/pulliAbility to climb ladders and stairs./liliRepetitive bending and stooping./liliLifting heavy marine equipment and lifting objects from various levels up to 75 pounds./liliAbility to work outdoors in all elements during all seasons./liliSince the use of a respirator mask is required, technicians must be clean shaven at all times to ensure an effective face seal./li/ulpOutcomes/ppThe Liquid Barge Technician is expected to consistently deliver clean, inspection-ready barges that meet all safety, environmental, and regulatory standards. Successful performance includes zero safety incidents, accurate and timely inspection reporting, and minimal equipment downtime due to effective troubleshooting and maintenance. Barges must be cleared for loading/unloading without delays, and decks kept clean to prevent hazards. The technician should demonstrate reliability in shift coverage and travel flexibility, while supporting operational efficiency and maintaining a strong safety culture.
