Sterile Processing Technician

The Central Supply Technician is responsible for the cleaning, processing, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation, patient care equipment, and reusable medical/surgical items. This position also functions as a Case Cart Attendant for the Operating Room. Receives, sorts, processes, assembles, or sterilizes both patient care equipment and surgical instruments according to established departmental policies. Understands all detergents and disinfectants used to process items. Implements both Universal Precautions and proper use of personal protective equipment. Operates and loads sterilizers and assures biological tests and Bowie Dick tests are correctly performed, incubated, read, and recorded. Assures sterilization records are completed accurately by recording all items processed, ensuring the correct label/load gun is used, reading and interpreting chemical integrators per load, and observing and initialing all computerized printouts for accuracy. Adheres to correct use of computerized instrument count sheets. Prepares case carts for delivery to rooms by using doctors' preference information to assemble required instruments, drugs, and special equipment. Notifies the nursing team in rooms of missing items and confers with the coordinator about shortages of supplies and equipment while completing a daily checklist. Lifts a minimum of 50 lbs, pushes and pulls a minimum of 60 lbs, and stands for the length of the shift. Adheres to the standards identified in the organization's competencies. Required skills include surgical instrumentation handling, knowledge of detergents and disinfectants, sterilization, instrument processing, and patient care equipment handling. Additional skills include proper use of personal protective equipment, operation of sterilizers, biological testing, Bowie Dick testing, sterilization recordkeeping, universal precautions, use of computerized instrument count sheets, case cart preparation, inventory management, and physical stamina. Required education includes a high school diploma or equivalent. Required certifications include National Certification: CRCST or CBSPDT.
