Pharmacist

The Inpatient Pharmacist is responsible for ensuring safe, effective, and cost-efficient drug therapy within the pharmacy department. This role involves preparing and dispensing medications according to federal and state laws, providing patient counseling and education, advising healthcare staff on drug therapy, and maintaining appropriate drug inventory. The pharmacist will also participate in quality improvement activities and collaborate closely with medical, nursing, and village staff to optimize patient care outcomes. Responsibilities:

• Review all prescriptions for appropriateness, legality, completeness, and potential interactions or contraindications.
• Provide clinical consultation and resolve concerns with prescribers prior to dispensing medications.
• Document clinical activities and interventions accurately and completely.
• Enter prescriptions into pharmacy software and verify finished prescription orders timely and accurately.
• Advise patients clearly regarding medication use, indications, expected outcomes, and verify patient understanding.
• Communicate regularly with patients and healthcare providers to resolve medication-related issues and optimize care.
• Perform chart reviews for prescription refills and medication therapy management, including writing recommendations and requesting refills on behalf of patients.
• Provide drug information, drug therapy consultation, and staff education related to pharmacotherapy.
• Direct and verify the daily activities of pharmacy support personnel and serve as a role model and educator for pharmacy students and technicians.
• Participate in clinical and administrative activities including quality control and quality improvement initiatives.
• Ensure availability, preparation, and control of medications and select appropriate drugs for the formulary.
• Work in pharmacy-run clinics and provide health promotion and disease prevention activities related to drug use and preventative therapy.
• Attend meetings and participate on committees as requested.
• Perform additional departmental duties as assigned.

• Pharm.D. degree and licensure as a registered pharmacist in the State of Alaska (candidates with Bachelor of Pharmacy and 3 years hospital or ambulatory clinic experience considered if licensed prior to 2003).
• Unrestricted pharmacist license in Alaska.
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers.
• Proficiency in pharmaceutical sciences, medication review, and knowledge of applicable laws and regulations.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Computer application skills and accurate math skills for drug dosage calculations.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, make critical decisions, and respond to emergencies.
• Minimum of 2 years of relevant pharmacy experience preferred.

• Completion of a nationally recognized pharmacy residency program (ASHP accredited).
• Experience working in hospital and ambulatory clinic pharmacy settings.

• Must hold a current Alaska pharmacist license prior to start date.
• Flu vaccination is required.
• Start date contingent upon timely submission and processing of fingerprint cards.
