Peer Support Specialist III (Intensive Community Work (iCW)) Position: Peer Support Specialist III (Intensive Community Work (iCW)) Department: NJMS – Medicine Infectious Disease Grade: 177 FLSA: Nonexempt Salary: $26,730 – $28,050 (Annual) Overview New Jersey’s academic health center, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS), integrates education, clinical care, and research to improve human health. RBHS includes eight schools, a behavioral health network, and centers focused on cancer, neuroscience, biotechnology, environmental and occupational health, and health care policy. Clinical and academic facilities are located throughout the state, partnering with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Newark’s University Hospital, and other affiliates. Posting Summary Rutgers is seeking a Peer Support Specialist III to connect and engage clients who have been lost to follow‑up or have never accessed care. The role models recovery and wellness principles, provides non‑clinical support, and works with the medical case management team to address barriers to connection and retention in care. The specialist offers reliable information, appropriate referrals, emotional support, and helps clients access services and resources through individual and group sessions. Key Duties Introduce community health worker services to all newly diagnosed and new to clinic patients. Assist the medical case management team with caseloads of newly diagnosed and lost to follow‑up patients. Assist in the collection of necessary documents and submission of applications for housing, emergency financial assistance, and medication assistance. Manage an assigned caseload. Provide intensive adherence counseling to patients not virally suppressed for more than 6 months. Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent required. Three (3) years of training and/or experience with knowledge of the Newark area, community resources, and issues related to living with HIV or AIDS, or active participation in community activities and support groups. Equivalent experience, education, and/or training may be substituted for the education or experience requirements. Demonstrated competency in Microsoft Applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and ability to use electronic medical record systems. Interest in serving the community; ability to work independently and seek guidance when needed. Good listening skills; ability to work with all levels of staff, patients, and healthcare professionals. Ability to work with a diverse group of people regardless of creed, race, or sexuality. Preferred Qualifications Sensitivity to a substance abuse environment. Bilingual skills (English/Spanish). Work Environment: Moderate noise (business office with computers and printers, light to moderate traffic). Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens requiring use of personal protective equipment.
