Starter/Ranger

Job Details Summary Maximizes play on the golf course by checking in players at the specified time, ensuring they have the appropriate information to proceed to the tee, observes gaps and openings of nine-hole pick‑up times, and monitors the course in accordance with established policies and procedures to provide security for members and guests. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Greets members and guests, confirms tee times, and provides pace‑of‑play information. Checks in members and guests and directs them to the correct tee at the correct time. Marks tee sheets after checking in players and maintains turn times for all groups. Records fleet cart numbers and relays information to the GPS Operator. Contacts the GPS Operator and Rangers on pace of play for lead groups and coordinates efforts to keep them on schedule. Reports open times to the Golf Center and ensures the group in the “on‑deck circle” is ready to play. Records changes to tee sheets and coordinates with the Golf Center and Ranger. Maintains the beverage station. Monitors the driving range for dress‑code violations and enforces all policies and procedures. Follows established starting‑time procedures and coordinates activities with the Starter on other shifts. Posts all course conditions and guides the Ranger staff. Assists in drafting Infraction Reports and follows all checklists. Maintains all first‑aid kits for the Starter’s tent and Ranger staff. Assists the Golf Center as needed. Maintains constant radio communication with Starters, the Golf Center, the Bag Room, and GPS Operators. Checks course conditions for the day, completes daily checklists and tracking reports, and reconciles play against tee sheets. Monitors and maintains all comfort stations with proper levels of ice, cups, and lids, and reports any problems immediately. Ensures all emergency phones are in proper working order. Assists in course care and upkeep, administers established educational training programs, and marks hazard lines as scheduled. Enforces all policies and procedures throughout the day. Communicates with members, co‑workers, management, and the general public in a courteous and professional manner. Conforms with all regulations, policies, work procedures, and instructions. Exhibits a professional demeanor that reflects a positive image of The Polo Club. Performs other duties as assigned by the First Assistant Senior Golf Professional. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of the game of golf and its etiquette. Ability to work outdoors and stand for long periods. Ability to analyze data and prepare reports. Verbal communication skills in English, both spoken and written. Comprehension and execution of verbal and written instructions in English. Professional interaction and effective relationship building with superiors, co‑workers, and members. Multitasking capability in a fast‑paced environment. Use of a radio earpiece to communicate with various departments. Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and Experience High school diploma or GED, or one to two years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Private country club experience is preferred. Language Skills Ability to communicate well in English, read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and to speak effectively before groups of members or employees. Mathematical Skills Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Reasoning Ability Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form, and to handle problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Computer Skills No specific computer skills required. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Must have a valid driver’s license. Physical Demands The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds, maintain close, distance, peripheral, and depth vision, and wear a surveillance earpiece. Responsibilities include sitting, handling, reaching, walking, standing, climbing, and balancing. The employee must also identify red flags and golf cart locations from varying distances. Work Environment Work performed outdoors in varying weather conditions; exposure to fumes, airborne particles, vibration, and moving mechanical parts. The noise level is usually moderate.
