Overview The Howard Center for Investigative Journalism at the University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism seeks an Associate Director for Data & AI Investigations and Partnerships, a faculty position that leads data‑driven investigative reporting and collaboration with national newsrooms. Responsibilities Launch and manage a curated data and document collection for journalists. Assist the center director with data‑driven reporting collaborations with professional and academic partners. Manage student‑driven investigative data journalism projects with partner news organizations. Integrate large language models and other AI tools responsibly into reporting workflows. Oversee staff and graduate fellows specializing in investigative data journalism. Teach one hands‑on class per year on Howard Center data investigations. Preferred Experience Experience producing investigative data journalism as a reporter. Experience managing investigative data journalism projects as an editor or project manager. Experience building and maintaining newsworthy databases or document collections. Experience experimenting with large language models, machine learning, or AI in journalism. Experience establishing editorial collaborations with internal or external newsroom partners. Teaching and mentoring, including university‑level teaching or workshops. Management experience with professionals, interns, or students. Interest in storytelling forms tailored to new audiences. Minimum Requirements Bachelor’s degree and at least four years of professional journalism experience, including data journalism. Application Materials A resume.
