Ultrafast Laser Materials Scientist - Optics & Diagnostics

What You Will Do: Contribute to innovative research in the field of pulsed laser-ablation based processing and diagnostics. Research studies that unveil the fundamental mechanisms of laser matter interactions as it relates to the development of processing techniques and optical spectroscopies. Advance laser technologies for energy-related and nuclear security applications. Carry out work plans for multiple tasks, lead data collection and analysis efforts, use findings to improve system performance, and suggest follow-on work. Develop solutions to complex technical problems. Design experiments and modify or combine laser, detectors, and optical spectrometer components as needed. Apply computer analysis and simulation programs to interpret experimental data and characterize material surfaces. Carry out collaborative research with internal scientists, research associates, postdoctoral fellows, and students. Provide technical support, training and mentoring to students and postdocs. Contribute to proposal and manuscript writing, speaking at scientific meetings and program reviews. Adhere with LBNL and EH&S safety guidelines and requirements. Additional Responsibilities as needed: Collaborate with external personnel outside of the Lab, including funding agencies and other researchers in their respective fields. What Is Required: Advanced degree. in experimental Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field. Experience in optics, experimental system design, and automation. Extensive experience with pulsed laser material interactions, preferably in the ultrafast laser regime. Experience with various morphological and chemical characterization techniques. Familiarity with diagnostic data interpretation and correlation. Demonstrated expertise and knowledge in the field of laser processing and related advanced diagnostics. Sample preparation and comprehensive laser ablation surface modification characterization. Excellent communication skills including writing and presenting. Excellent time management and organizational skills. Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently. Desired Qualifications: Ph.D. in experimental Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or other related field. Pump-probe experimentation. Basic knowledge in machine learning. Names and contact information for at least three individuals who can write letters of reference Notes: This is a full time, 1 year, career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. This position is expected to pay $11,467 - $12,674 which fits within the full salary range of $10,059 - $14,081. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
