Senior Professional Protection Engineer

Overview WSP is initiating a search for a Senior Professional, Electrical Engineer with a Protective Relaying emphasis for our Cleveland, OH office. The successful applicant will have a direct role in the design, engineering, and studies of protection systems for equipment on the bulk power system. This includes the protection of substations, transmission lines, generators, renewables, industrial, and distribution systems. Responsibilities Protective Relaying: Symmetrical component analysis, protection philosophy development, relay settings, and integration with SCADA systems. Protection Analyses: Electrical model development, short circuit, time-current coordination, arc flash, NERC compliance, and event analysis. Leadership: Lead teams on client projects to meet the scope, schedule, and budget. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers. Data Acquisition: Support infrequent onsite site visits to collect data and discuss project specifics at an appropriate technical level for clients. Industry Standards: Working knowledge or awareness of applicable industry practices for protection as outlined in IEEE, ANSI, or NERC PRC standards. Organized: Flexibility to support a variety of project schedules to meet client needs and prioritize responsibilities effectively. Applicable software: AcSELeratorQuickset, GEEnervista, ASPENOneliner, CAPE, SKM-PTW, ETAP, RSCAD Applicable hardware: SEL, GE, Siemens, ABB, Beckwith, RTDS Compliance: Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures. Other: Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Qualifications Required Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET accredited). 5 to 7 years of relevant post-education experience as an electrical engineer executing deliverables for Protective Relaying projects in power generation, transmission, and distribution at a utility, industrial, or commercial scale. Experience working with Operations and project controls for reporting and proposal development. Proficient knowledge of electrical engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and related permitting and project work issues. Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management, including involvement in rehabilitation and new design projects. Working knowledge of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements. Ability to perform technical computations and interpret plans and specifications in line with regulations. Effective interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences. Strong self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment. Ability to work independently and provide guidance to junior team members with adherence to QA/QC. Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, discipline-specific design software (CADD, Aspen, CAPE, ETAP), AutoCAD electrical, technology, math principles, predictive models, and spreadsheets. Developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge to testing results, data collation, and analysis to reach effective solutions. Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s health, safety, and harassment policies. Ability to work schedules conducive to project requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek. Occasional travel may be required depending on project needs. Preferred Qualifications Professional Engineering (PE) license or ability to obtain one. History of completing similar projects in a consulting environment. Experience commissioning and testing, or strong skills in protecting equipment at high voltages (69 kV and higher). Willingness to mentor others.
