Financial Counselor

Frye Regional Medical Center, located in the beautiful foothills of North Carolina, is a 355‑bed acute care hospital, 81‑bed Behavioral Health facility, and home to more than 70 primary and specialty care providers. How You'll Contribute A Financial Counselor maintains and processes all assigned patient accounts and counsels patients regarding the admitting and discharging processes and payment alternatives. Work is of a confidential nature. Essential Functions Consults patients (or responsible parties) to establish a payment method. Contacts patients—in advance of admission—to obtain missing information, particularly the patient’s signature accepting the obligation to pay. Estimates and informs patients of the portion of the bill which must be paid directly. Establishes a payment plan for patients unable to pay the estimated portion of the bill upon discharge. Identifies and reports to the manager patients with whom payment difficulties arose in the past. Ensures completeness of pre‑admission and admission information, following through as needed, to obtain and document missing information/signatures prior to the patient’s admission date. Checks for, and identifies patients with histories of payment problems, and informs the supervisor of any findings prior to the patient’s admission date. Accurately interprets insurance policy provisions and calculates the self‑pay portion of the patient’s bill based on the expected length of stay and services rendered, so that the final accounting of the self‑pay amount is within a reasonable variance from the estimate. Patiently, clearly, and accurately advises the patient of self‑pay obligations and estimates, ensuring that the patient signs acceptance of such obligation on the designated forms. Collects self‑pay monies in advance, upon entry, or at discharge according to circumstances. When patients are unable to pay the self‑pay portion due upon discharge, ensures that a mutually agreed upon payment agreement is documented and signed by all parties, in compliance with established guidelines and procedures. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Proficient in the use of software programs. Excellent customer service and telephone skills. Minimum of one year of business or related experience, including bookkeeping with the use of calculating equipment and collection of monies. Hospital or medical business office experience preferred.
