Orientation and Mobility Specialist (Part- Time)

This position is not a State of Michigan position; it is a Michigan School for the Deaf contracted position.


BASIC FUNCTION:
An Orientation & Mobility Specialist (O&M) is contracted to provide services to eligible students at Michigan School for the Deaf and works under the supervision of the Supervisor of Special Education. The part-time position will be for 1-3 days per week and is dependent on student needs. The O&M evaluates, participates in the development of the Individual Education Program (IEP), and implements the IEP for each student with a vision loss on their caseload; providing direct and explicit instruction and consultation services.

Specifically, the O&M will:

• participate as a member of the Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team and IEP Team for all students who are Blind or visually impaired, or are suspected of, being Blind or visually impaired.
• assess travel skills in a variety of settings to determine whether the student needs or continues to need O&M services and to determine a student's functional needs based on present levels. Evaluation includes writing reports, meeting with IEP Teams, and talking with parents.
• assess, develop, and implement orientation and mobility instructional programs which would allow for increased independence in orientation and mobility.
• develop appropriate IEP goals, maintain provider log, and complete progress report on a schedule consistent with the IEP.
• provide direct and indirect services to students who are Blind or visually impaired in accordance with the IEP and that are supportive of the classroom teacher and the student (s) on the provider's caseload.
• provide direct instruction and services on navigating the environment (class, school, home, neighborhood and city) to ensure safe, confident, efficient, and independent mobility to students on the provider's caseload.
• provide indirect services and consultation to classroom teachers and other educational personnel, including paraprofessionals, on behalf of the student(s) on the provider's caseload.
• provide supportive services to parents of visually impaired students.
• be responsible for Medicaid billing on a monthly basis.
• utilize district technology and maintain proficiency, as required skill sets change with technology and/or needs of district.
• maintain regular, predictable in-person attendance expected.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

• The candidate must:
• • Possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Orientation and Mobility
  • Possess Orientation and Mobility Certification

MDE Teacher Consultant for Visually Impaired approval, preferred not required

• Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform assigned duties, including lifting fifty (50) pounds on an occasional basis and in excess of fifty (50) pounds with assistance.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Knowledge of agencies providing services for the blind and visually impaired;
• One (1) year of successful experience in a local school district or ISD program;
• Classroom experience teaching orientation and mobility skills
• Skill in providing training in concept development, gross motor development, posture, kinesthetic perception, sensory discrimination, pre-cane skills, basic mobility skills and techniques;
• Skill in preparing and maintaining reports and records;
• Knowledge of the development of skills related to self-help strategies and reinforcement procedures to encourage students to move independently throughout their environment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT :
In-person at Michigan School for the Deaf. Work is performed in an office, school or community environment and involves continuous contact with staff, representatives of other agencies and members of the public.


COMPENSATION :
$35 - $45 per hour depending on experience and qualifications
Day shift 1-3 days per week with a flexible schedule.
No nights and no weekends.
