DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The Safety Supervisor assists the Manager to develop, implement, and oversee the health and safety programs which provide guidelines and resources to ensure the goals of individual departments, and the organization as a whole are met. The components of the programs will create a secure and safe culture that is proactive and continually improving. Key components of the programs will minimally include hazard identification and risk assessment, standardized operations, guidelines and procedures, contractor management, guest safety, team member training programs, incident investigation, ICS and emergency management and the monitoring of safety and health regulations with provided technical support to ensure compliance. As the overseer of all facets of safety the supervisor will also ensure systems/process fidelity, and that all appropriate and necessary trainings and certifications, and training and inspection logs are current, compliant, and sufficient for the secure and safe operations of The Living Desert.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
GENERAL:
Consistently adhere to all TLD and department policies and procedures. Assist with safety programs and strategies to ensure the organization’s compliance with OSHA, L&I, AZA, USDA, and other safety and environmental standards and regulations as required. Conducts and/or oversees periodic safety inspections to ensure compliance with other departments to develop timely solutions. Assesses and identifies trends in safety performance through leading indicators, data review, efficiency, and cost effectively. Responsible for providing safety presentations and trainings, including golf cart safety, pepper/Bear spray, Off road vehicle, for every new team member during onboarding and orientation. Patrols all areas of the property. Able to monitor cameras, I.P. camera system, FOB systems, perimeter, alarm systems, and fire & life safety systems. Provide First Aid and CPR to guests or staff in need of medical assistance. Ensure all doors and buildings are secure; lock any open or unlocked areas. Monitors activities on TLD property Assists with Manager on Duty (MOD) responsibilities when needed and willing to train others. Communicate with relevant departments for after-hours emergencies or issues. Respond promptly to alarms, both during daytime and after hours. Escort Vendors and Contractors that need access to zoo grounds and see that they are held to safe operations while on TLD grounds. Provide reports and observations at the end of shift. Offer directions and answer any questions guests may have. Will assist and lead when needed with various projects, office work, SOPs/policies, drills, emergency preparedness, and various tasks. Ensures necessary medical supplies are ordered, logged, and maintained for all staff and areas across the Zoo, while keeping Safety supply and storage areas functional and well-organized. Additionally, while assisting with incoming supplies and logging and distributing of them across the zoo. Assist guests with transportation needs, to their vehicles or the gift shop as needed Collaborate with team members and departments to ensure workflow efficiency and adherence to timelines.HEALTH AND SAFETY PROGRAM:
Develops and maintains organizational culture which supports the Zoo’s overall strategic objectives and goals by providing leadership on issues involving safety, cost, quality, processes, and people. Participates and provides training for the First Aid Team for the organization. Create new training materials as required. May need to conduct accident investigations to identify root cause and generate recommendations to reduce or eliminate hazards and perform follow-up inspections to verify effectiveness/resolution. Conducts/facilitates job safety and other technical analyses. Manage and maintain SDS and Hazard Communication program. Assist and conduct when needed with mandatory training drill exercises along with documentation for Association of Zoos and Aquariums accreditation standards. Contribute to a positive and respectful team environment by offering support, sharing knowledge, and communicating openly. Demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to assist team members as needed to meet deadlines and organizational objectives. Will requires the ability to interact effectively with peers in cross-functional roles and lead team members to be successful. Will assist with overseeing various shifts/teams/events while allowing open communication and professional peer to peer feedback. Along with assuring expected tasks and projects are properly completed in a timely manner.SAFETY:
Interfaces with all departments to ensure that safety measures are in place. Examples include major project construction, animal enclosures, guest access, team member access, special events, etc. Demonstrate strong organizational skills to ensure timely completion of assignments and responsibilities. Balance short-term tasks with long-term projects, ensuring consistent progress and completion across all areas of responsibility. Leads Park clearing and closing procedures at the end of the day or events and reports any information to MOD/Base. Coordinate with and support Public Safety agencies as needed. Investigate incidents to understand root causes and implement actions to reduce or eliminate causes. Assures that all Safety equipment and materials are in good working order and up to current standards. Checking AED’s, First Aid Cabinets, Stop the Bleed kits, Fire Extinguishers, and emergency lights and exits, and all other related department checks Assist with assuring inspections and installations of safety equipment and systems are done properly and up to proper standards for that location. Maintain records and documents in compliance with all regulatory and internal record keeping requirements and provides statistical data on safety performance. Prepares and submits regulatory reports, notifications, and communications with their leadership. Proactively monitor and address guest behaviors to prevent potential safety concerns. Provide additional support for day, evening, and night events, including TLD Gala, event dinners, or luncheons for the zoo. Assist with overseeing first aid reports, near misses, or Incident reports. Communication and following up with the injured guest or team member along with assuring proper leadership is notified, this includes providing Urgent care authorization and DWC1 Form. Animal Safety and Other departments: Conduct safety inspections of perimeter fence along with reports to leadership. Provide safety training for Animal staff that will include Pepper spray training, First-Aid/AED, Stop the Bleed, and Fire extinguisher training. May need to perform regular safety inspections with animal care team members. Collaborate with team members and departments to ensure workflow efficiency and adherence to timelines.COMMUNITY INTERACTION:
Integration with Guest Services: Ensure Zoo guests and visitors receive positive and impactful guest experience by applying top quality guest service standards and Zoo principles. Handle escalated guest-related safety issues. Partner with various departments, both internally and externally, to help target improvements and reduce/manage risks. Provide additional support for day and night events, including TLD Gala, event dinners, or luncheons for the zoo. RequirementsEDUCATION AND PRE-REQUISITES
3 to 4 years of experience in a similar role. High school diploma or equivalent, required. Knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to safety and health programs. Experience performing job safety hazard analysis and implementing behavior-based health and safety practices. Current Private security officer licensed or Guard card or must obtain within 6 months of hiring. License will also need to be maintained during employment. Certificate on first aid, CPR and AED, Stop the bleed, IBCCES training, Mandated reporter, and all other training courses required are obtained within 120 days of employment. First Aid and CPR/AED Instructor certified or obtained within 6 months of employment. Stop the bleed instructor certified or obtained within 6 months of employment. Familiar with safety and security systems (ex: CCTV, access control, alarms, visitor management) Experience with overseeing teams and multiple shifts Able to communicate with all levels of team members and recognize the need to flex and interpersonal skills and styles to support improved understanding and trust proactively and effectively. Ability to motivate, delegate, provide leadership, conflict resolution, training and listening, among others to successfully implement health and safety policies and procedures. High level of computer skills in MS Office Suite. Must be able to communicate effectively (written and oral). Must have good organizational skills and be able to plan, prioritize, and coordinate several projects simultaneously. Must be able to handle tough decisions and difficult situations to provide value to overall health and safety program. Must be able to identify problems using investigative processes to analyze and evaluate complex information and ability to utilize creativity, innovation, best judgment, and logical reasoning to resolve these problems. Work involves exposure to elements, such as extreme temperature, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require basic safety precautions.HOLIDAY/EVENING WORK:
Ability to work nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays and/or irregular hours. Ability to handle situations where the team member may encounter potentially abusive/threatening people/animals in enforcement of regulations/animal escapes.TRAVEL:
