Public Safety Officer (Security Officer)

Position Type / Hours Full‑time, Classified IFPTE; hours determined by supervisor. Work Environment Outside weather conditions, temperature extremes, day/night shifts, emergency and stressful situations. Use standard office equipment. Physical Demands Requires sitting, talking, hearing, standing, walking, using hands and fingers, reaching. Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Requires close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, adjust focus. Salary IFPTE - I-13 Step 1: $44,323.02. Assigned either 2nd or 3rd shift. Job Summary Under supervision, during assigned duty, provides assistance and protection to persons and property on campus, maintains order, ensures compliance with law, performs related duties. Essential employee under Title 4A; required to report for duty under all conditions. Responsibilities Conduct patrols on foot and vehicle throughout campus; make reports via radio or telephone. Prevent unauthorized entry; check automobiles and trucks entering/leaving campus and log vehicle details. Take action to prevent criminal acts and violations of policy, including fire, theft, vandalism, disorder, or damage to property. Conduct mandatory fire watches per State or College Fire Marshal code. Open and close buildings, gates, doors, windows; operate flags; control lighting and HVAC equipment. Provide assistance during accidents or illness; summon emergency medical services, fire, and police. Inspect assigned areas; log and secure found property; file reports with details. Provide directions to visitors, students, faculty, and staff. Maintain order and decorum campus-wide; escort or remove offenders with minimal disruption. Direct traffic and regulate pedestrian and vehicular flow to assure safety and efficiency. Enforce parking policies; issue summonses and perform vehicle booting. Assess suspicious persons/conditions; report significant actions, incidents, hazards. Investigate complaints involving misconduct, suspicious behavior, illegal activities; prepare clear reports. Operate Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, emergency alert broadcast, video camera system. Communicate clearly with faculty, staff, students, visitors; be familiar with campus alarm systems. Complete Defensive Driver course; perform first aid if required. Operate in indoor/outdoor environments, including inclement weather. Organizational Security Responsibilities Adhere to information security policies and procedures; participate in security awareness training; promptly report incidents. Education High school graduation or equivalent from a vocational school. Requirements Valid New Jersey driver’s license. Pass physical exam and drug test upon offer.
