Job Description
The Packer plays a key role in keeping food production lines running efficiently and ensuring all products are packaged accurately according to established specifications, safety standards, and quality guidelines. This position involves working with automated packaging equipment, performing manual packing tasks, handling materials, completing documentation in computer systems, and supporting food safety and quality assurance programs in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities

• Perform all tasks in strict accordance with Safety and Food Safety Standards and follow all related company policies and procedures.
• Participate in safety training programs and support the development of safety initiatives to promote a strong culture of safety.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory and certification requirements, including SQF, GMP, HACCP, OSHA, Food Fraud/Defense, Allergens, Organic, and Gluten Free programs.
• Maintain thorough knowledge of products being packed, including product specifications and the correct weight of each tortilla produced.
• Retrieve product specifications from the company ERP system and use them to guide packing activities.
• Identify and understand the specifications of boxes and bags used for packaging products.
• Program date coding machines for bags and boxes according to product rotation and production requirements.
• Prepare the workstation at the start of the shift with required bags, boxes, and materials, and keep the work area clean and organized in line with good housekeeping policies.
• Follow the production schedule and specifications to meet productivity goals and maintain efficient line performance.
• Participate in line rotations throughout the day or workweek, including moving to other lines, assisting co-workers, and cleaning lines during machine downtime or break and lunch coverage.
• Maintain continuous communication with line leaders and machine operators regarding any product deficiencies, such as raw or overcooked tortillas, incorrect weights, or size deviations, and foster proactive communication with co-workers.
• Operate automated packaging equipment such as Auto Baggers and Ilapak machines.
• Perform complete changeovers in the packaging area, including vision systems, counter stackers, auto baggers, bag printers, and weight settings.
• Enter production information into the TGI Machine Log system and complete product pathways in the TGI system.
• Record all downtime accurately in the Machine Log system.
• Retrieve packaging materials from the warehouse and return unused materials to warehouse storage at the end of each production run.
• Use computers and RF guns proficiently to access information and record data.
• Rotate continuously within assigned workstations, including packaging tortillas, boxing tortillas, and lifting boxes up to 50 lbs throughout the shift.
• Assist with quality assurance programs, including pH verification, metal detection checks, recording pH levels, identifying specification errors related to pH, and performing line quality checks.
• Follow and comply with all SQF requirements and maintain workstations in accordance with SQF guidelines.
• Perform visual product inspections and report any issues with product quality or packaging.
• Carry out general labor tasks such as picking, material handling, palletizing, stacking, and inventory-related activities as needed.
• Organize product into boxes, place product on pallets, and operate pallet jacks to move or transport finished product and raw materials to designated locations.
• Prioritize safety and general manufacturing practices at all times.
• Complete other duties as assigned to support production and packaging operations.

Essential Skills

• Grade school education; High School Diploma or GED is a plus.
• 1-2 years of experience operating or working with food manufacturing machinery or similar equipment.
• 1-2 years of experience following work task specifications, standard operating procedures (SOPs), recipes, or similar instructions.
• Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency in basic math and proper use of a calculator.
• Basic computer skills and ability to work with ERP systems and data entry tools.
• Proficient analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and resolve issues with products and packaging materials.
• Strong organizational skills to manage materials, documentation, and workflow effectively.
• Ability to work as a team player and collaborate with co-workers, leaders, and machine operators.
• Self-motivation and ability to identify errors in products and packaging materials without constant supervision.
• Ability to work at required production speeds while following established safety requirements.
• Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 lbs on a regular basis.
• Ability to stand and perform work for prolonged periods.
• Ability to bend, stoop, crawl, reach, grasp, and work in adverse or awkward positions as required by the job.
• Reliability and punctuality, with flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and off-shifts as needed.
• Ability to comply with company attendance and punctuality policies.
• Ability to fulfill essential job functions in a consistent state of alertness and in a safe manner.
• Ability to comply with and follow all food safety and third-party certification policies, including SQF, Gluten-Free, and Organic programs.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with packing, packaging, production, general labor, picking, material handling, palletizing, stacking, and inventory tasks.
• Familiarity with automated packaging equipment such as Auto Baggers and Ilapak machines.
• Experience accessing product specifications through an ERP system and entering production data into computer-based systems.
• Comfort working with metal detection programs and pH verification processes in a food manufacturing environment.
• Ability to drive industrial equipment such as pallet jacks.
• High attention to detail for visual inspections and adherence to product specifications and guidelines.
• Commitment to maintaining a zero-tolerance approach to drugs and alcohol in the workplace.

Work Environment
This role is based in a food manufacturing facility with continual walking and standing on hard surfaces, as well as climbing and descending steps throughout the shift. The work involves frequent bending, kneeling, squatting, stooping, reaching, pulling, pushing, and lifting up to 50 lbs. Employees may be exposed to rotating and reciprocating machine parts and are expected to drive industrial equipment such as pallet jacks. The environment includes exposure to cool and hot temperatures and varying levels of noise. Team members must be able to stand for long periods and work safely around production machinery while adhering to all food safety, SQF, and general manufacturing practices.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Elk Grove, CA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $21.57 - $21.57/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
