Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist

Summary : The position is that of a Registered Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist with skill and training in Interventional Angiography, including 3‑Dimensional carotid angiography and stent placement, 3‑Dimensional peripheral angioplasty and stent placement, cardiac catheterization, cardiac angioplasty and stent placement, and related cardiac procedures such as permanent pacemakers, temporary pacemakers, ICDs, and biventricular devices. Qualifications United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology – Radiography (ARRT) (R). Education: Completion of a full‑time training course of at least 24 months in a post‑high‑school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or other recognized accrediting agencies. Credentialing Standards: Public Law 97‑35 requires persons who administer radiologic procedures to meet 42 CFR Part 75 standards for accreditation and credentialing. Physical Requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). Qualification Standard: May qualify under the Grandfathering Provision for current VHA employees who meet criteria. Grade Determinations: Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist – GS‑9 employees are fully functional as an advanced DRT and execute assigned tasks independently. Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to GS‑8, directly related to the position, demonstrating the clinical competencies described. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must demonstrate technical KSAs, including balancing patient and staff needs during complex scans, assessing contraindications, life‑support practices, aseptic techniques, hematologic monitoring, and pre‑/procedural patient care. Preferred Experience: 3‑5 years in Cath/EP lab, including EKG interpretation, hemodynamic monitoring, EP mapping/ultrasound, 3‑D mapping, and closure devices. Duties Perform a variety of complex, specialized radiographic procedures in advanced treatment situations. Execute innovative 3‑Dimensional angiography with high‑speed rotational and prop scanning, peripheral cryoplasty, and Helix air‑driven mechanical thrombolectomies. Conduct other procedures including visceral and peripheral angiography, abscess drainages, fistulograms, renal arteriograms, angioplasties, stent placements, venograms, carotid arteriograms, carotid stent placements, biopsies, cardiac catheterization, and related cardiac procedures. Transfer patients from stretcher or wheelchair to radiographic table. Prepare room, equipment, and materials needed for patient procedures. Provide support in the Cardiac Catheterization Suite during diagnostic cardiac catheterizations, balloon angioplasties, valvuloplasty, TPA therapy, and related interventional radiology procedures. Manage technical support for new, complex innovative scans and procedures such as 3‑dimensional carotid and peripheral stent placement and high‑speed rotational cardiac peripheral scans. Prepare surgical procedural trays using sterile technique and scrub in with the physician to assist tableside. Follow aseptic techniques and universal precautions throughout procedures. Operate, maintain, and record complex cardiac hemodynamic data using a multi‑channel electronic recorder. Operate equipment such as ACT monitors, oxygen consumption computers, defibrillators, and temporary pacemakers. Complete certification in ACLS/BLS and recognize signs of distress or adverse reactions, reporting to the physician and assisting in treatment. Perform necessary computer work pre‑ and post‑procedure, prepare procedural/patient forms, and gather relevant patient information from medical records, families, and healthcare providers. Maximize patient throughput through coordination with escort, ward secretaries, and nursing personnel. Maintain adequate supplies within assigned rooms and keep abreast of current literature in cardiovascular and interventional technology. Set up and position patients, selecting proper technical factors to provide diagnostic procedures, and monitor examinations for optimal image quality. Maintain operation logs and patient files for each examination. Coordinate daily schedule and consult with hospital physicians and administrative personnel regarding patient examinations. Perform safety checks to ensure compliance with FDA safety standards. Assist with development and training of new imaging specialists, residents, and general clinical employees. Communicate with the manager to ensure technical oversight and training of personnel. Ensure quality assurance of images and maintain transmission to off‑site locations. Explain procedures, positioning, and troubleshooting to patients and staff. Work Schedule: Monday‑Friday 7 am‑3:30 pm. Recruitment Incentive: Not Authorized.
