Special Education Teacher
Essential Duties And Responsibilities: Performs a variety of assessments and observations to determine the areas in which the student may need extra or modified educational services. Assessment areas may include academic performance, behavior, social development, or physical health. Identifies the students' needs and develops related lesson and teaching plans. Develops an integrated plan for the education of each child by collaborating with classroom teachers, parents, psychologists, social workers, and other medical and school staff. Develops individualized education programs (IEPs) for each student, setting learning goals and adopting modifications as necessary; ensures each student's activities and lessons are planned and organized according to his/her abilities. Develops and teaches lessons that provide engaging learning opportunities for small groups and individual students while meeting required specifications of IEPs and 504 plans. Implements IEPs, provides ongoing or follow-up assessments, and continually tracks progress and makes modifications as necessary. Collaborates with classroom and homeroom teachers to ensure each student's needs are met and plans are followed. Ensures programs comply with Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA), ensures each applicable student is provided with Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) that is properly modified for his/her individual needs. Develops, completes, and maintains all paperwork mandated by local, state, and federal guidelines, laws, and regulations. Applies knowledge of special education teaching methods, research, and best practices through professional development and study. Establishes and enforces classroom management structure and rules that ensure the academic engagement and the physical and mental safety of all students. Celebrates the achievements and successes of students. Participates in faculty meetings, educational conferences, in-service opportunities, workshops, and other training seminars. Attends parent-teacher conferences, IEP meetings, etc. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree Ongoing maintenance of all requirements regarding professional courses and in-service required. Submission of pre-employment medical examination (Section 148 of the Pennsylvania School Code) Submission of a report of criminal history record from the Pennsylvania State Police (Section 111 of the Pennsylvania School Code) Submission of a clearance report from the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare in accordance with Act 151 of 1994 Submission of Federal Criminal History Record in accordance with Act 114 of 2006 Submission of the Arrest/Conviction Report and Certification Form as required under Act 24 of 2011 Submission of Act 126 Mandated Reporter Training certificate showing completion of a minimum of three (3) hours training every five (5) years. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
Required Skills/Abilities: Strong verbal and written communication skills with a willingness to develop these further. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to maintain a calm and patient demeanor with all students, while learning how to support diverse needs effectively. Basic understanding of various special education needs and services, with the ability to grow knowledge through mentorship and practice. Familiarity with a range of teaching methods, with a focus on learning how to implement them effectively for students with special education needs. Foundational knowledge of policies, laws, and guidelines related to special education, including IDEA, IEPs, and 504 plans, with the expectation of gaining deeper understanding and application over time under mentor guidance. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, or related software.
