AI/ML Postdoctoral Researcher Location: Livermore, CA | Full‑time Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) invites applications for an AI/ML Postdoctoral Researcher to work in the Laser Science and Systems Engineering (LSSE) Program, focusing on machine learning applications for laser performance optimization and modeling on the National Ignition Facility (NIF). Job Description In this role you will develop, validate and deploy AI/ML solutions for NIF laser performance, collaborating closely with BLIP, LPOM, and NIF laser operations teams. Conduct research and development of an inverse pulse solve machine learning system by training, testing, optimizing and deploying ML models (neural networks, gradient boosted trees, ensemble methods) using thousands of historical NIF laser setup calculations. Identify and pursue high‑impact AI/ML opportunities across the laser program, including laser performance prediction, optimization and anomaly detection, ML‑enhanced diagnostic data analysis and trending, and physics‑informed neural networks for laser physics modeling. Solve abstract and complex problems using advanced technical knowledge and innovative techniques. Collaborate with BLIP, LPOM and NIF laser operations to validate ML predictions and integrate ML tools into existing workflows. Support and educate team members on scientific AI/ML techniques. Organize, analyze and present results through peer‑reviewed publications, conference presentations, technical reports and regular briefings to stakeholders and NIF leadership. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications PhD in Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or related technical field. Expertise in machine learning and data science, including deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow), model uncertainty quantification (e.g., Bayesian methods) and large‑scale scientific datasets. Proficiency in Python and associated ML libraries (scikit‑learn, XGBoost), scientific computing (NumPy, SciPy, pandas), visualization (matplotlib, holoviews, plotly) and high‑performance computing. Experience directing independent research projects and publishing peer‑reviewed literature. Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team. Qualifications We Desire Foundation in physics with coursework or experience in laser physics, short‑pulse/high‑peak‑power laser systems, nonlinear optics, frequency conversion, laser‑matter interaction, optical propagation, beam physics, wave optics, solid‑state laser architectures or amplifier physics. Pay Range $123,048 annually Position Information Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Open to individuals who have earned a PhD at the time of hire.
