Behavior Technician

Primary Purpose: To support students with behavioral, emotional, and social challenges by implementing behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and strategies developed by behavior specialists and licensed professionals. The Behavior Technician works directly with students and staff to promote positive behavior, reduce disruptive conduct, and improve social-emotional functioning in both general and special education settings.

Qualifications:

• Education/Certification: High school diploma or GED (required) 48 college credit hours, associate degree, or passing score on the Paraprofessional Assessment of Academic Skills (required)
• CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) certification (required or must be obtained upon hire)
• Behavior Technician Certification (preferred, not required)

Special Knowledge/Skills:

• Knowledge of behavior management strategies and reinforcement techniques
• Ability to follow behavior plans and data collection procedures accurately
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with students with challenging behaviors
• Ability to maintain emotional control under stress and in crisis situations
• Professionalism, discretion, and ability to maintain confidentiality

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

• Student Support: Provide one-on-one or small group support to students with behavioral needs Implement strategies outlined in BIPs and under the guidance of special education and behavior staff Assist students with de-escalation techniques, emotional regulation, and replacement behaviors Model appropriate social skills and behavior for students throughout the school day
• Collaboration: Work closely with special education teachers, general education staff, and behavior specialists Participate in team meetings, ARDs, and behavior intervention planning when requested Communicate observations and progress to supervising staff and behavior team
• Documentation & Data Collection: Accurately record student behavior incidents and progress toward behavioral goals Assist in collecting ABC (Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence) data and other monitoring tools Report significant behavior concerns promptly to campus administration and support teams
• Safety and Supervision: Ensure student and staff safety during behavioral episodes using approved interventions only Supervise students during transitions, lunch, recess, or other activities as needed Monitor environments to proactively identify and address behavior triggers

Working Conditions:

• Frequent standing, walking, and physical interaction with students
• May involve lifting, restraining, or calming students in crisis (in accordance with CPI protocol)
• Indoor and outdoor supervision duties
• High mental and emotional stress potential

Note: This position requires patience, consistency, and the ability to work with students facing significant behavioral and emotional challenges. Continued employment may depend on availability of special education or behavior intervention funding.
